This song is about a love that never came to be and it turned ugly.
"If I would have know, it could have been you." Seems to refer to him moving on with another girl and then later discovering that he could have had the girl he really wanted.
"I Never wanted to be your enemy." Seems to show that due to his ignorance for her feelings or her jealousy they have come to bad terms.
The song doesn't really explain the relationship between him and the girl he is serenading but it is clear that whatever they had is broken due to a lack of trust which was created on his part.
Unlike a lot of his songs he does not once blame the girl for the events described and truly takes all the blame. Though clearly regretting whatever caused the distrust, he does not see any option of healing it but does apoligize troughout the song.
