Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So...

It's a song about the experience of childhood in the magical realm of innocence, when all things were sentient and watching over us, even the trees. That pure, basic sense of connection to all of nature is the Simple Thing. As we get older it's harder and harder to connect with the little child that we once were, but that child is still within us, and so is the Simple Thing.

Somewhere... That's Manswer's Shaw, Battle, East Sussex.
Why? That's the place the band used to play everyday when they were young. That's the spot where King Harold II died during the Battle of Hastings in the 14th of October, 1066.
The "river" flows from the hill where the battle took place.
However, they're not talking about the battle but about the destruction people has made to that place. It's somewhere only they know because that place they used to know no longer exists but in their minds. The spirit on the video represents the fallen trees through the years. It's basically a song against those destroying nature around the world.

This song is about a connection, to somebody or somewhere, whoever and wherever, that may be.

For me, it tells me about my mum, who I lost several years ago. I've mourned, and come through the grief. I'm happy and settled, and I have happy memories of my mum, but I miss her dearly.

The song takes me back to the simple little things we did, and the simple places that we went. The parks, the rivers, the trees.

I as grow old, I want those things so much more. I want my mum back, just for a minute, I want her to let me in. I want to show her my kids, I want to tell her what I've done.

Why don't we go, somewhere only we know.

When I lisen to this song it evokes an almost overwhelming sense of nostalgia as the singer seems to be yearning for something which he feels he can no longer find or create in his present life. To me the phrase "simple thing" is about the passage of time and how it defines our lives but can also quickly slip threw our fingers leaving nothing but fading memories in its wake.

Personally, I think this song it about two friends who found a special place to call their own.
As the two get older (the singer and the other person), one of the friends moves on and tries to forget about the place. The singer on the other hand, is looking back on the place and starts remembering every detail 'I knew the pathway like the back of my hand'
The singer asks if the friend would like to join him again 'And if you have a minute why don't we go talk about it somewhere only we know'. The singer finds it hard to rely on anyone because they were the only person he trusted.

This song holds profound truth in reflections of many senarios of life; it applies to so many personal stories, revelations of conciousness, interpretations whether tangibly, mentally, spiritually, and of the hearts.

The interpretation for you is what you heard and received from your heart.

It calls for the return to your heart.

I loved this song the very first time I heard it. It reminds of a special friendship that only I and the other person knows about. We use to hang out and talk and laugh about anything—special places, special restaurants and pit stops only we know about. It’s about having a shared sense of freedom and not much time left in our dream because we would have to go back to the “norm.” It’s a place we both always wanted to go and no one else knew but us and we found the place coincidentally on a whim. We enjoyed the simple things—but now they are gone. We can never go back there together but it’s somewhere only we know.

This song is not about a person, but a place.
3 keane members, Tom, Richard and Tim all grew up in the same place which is also the place where the battle of hastings was fought.
They talk about how they returned back to the place where they grew up after not having succes in London as a band. They chased a dream that did not work out and they went back. They also talk about how they had alot of memories in Battle.
I think that they also miss the old times and how simple life was when they were younger

To me, this song is more than everything I've heard about it. It makes me want to see something, something my eyes can not see on my own, but my heart can... it's odd to me, but it makes me pay closer attention to this song.

For me it reminds of those near me who is losing their memory. Dementia has hit home for me and when I hear this song it reminds when I brought then to places we only knew and for that short time they remember who they are. I always cry to this song because life is hard especially as we get older.

This song is about going back to where and when life was more simple. Man has unfortunately created with a sick intelligence this fast paced world where "money" and "time is money" predomjnates this so called "modern" life. This song reminds us all to go back to how things were. To go back to what life was before technology has screwed what the meaning of life is and what being alive really was meant to be and best exoerienced. This song reminds us to hold dear to the simple things, the simple places, and to all that speaks silently to our hearts. To seek a place where you are alone with our God, the Creator of the Universe, and the Maker of Man. Because only God can hear you now. The loud noises of this world and what this world offers leads to only death and confusion. We are only getting older but not wiser.

    This is about Earth.
He's an old man, and he can't believe that the Earth is slowly dying.
The path where he used to go is deserted due to pollution, and trees are falling down because of deforestation.

I think that’s a song for your real love you’ve tried with many different people but it’s never that pure love you used to have...and you’re tired of unrealistic expectations of love and couples an you’re ready to settle down with that special someone who made it all easy and special without big effort just by staying by your side... he’s saying when you’re gonna let me in ?? I’m getting old and i need someone to rely on that means time’s ticking and you haven’t made your mind but I want you do you want me or no?? ... I don’t know

I think that he is trying to get through a hard time and is trying to push through it and br strong but this place is his safe place where he can think and he is seeking guidance from someone who isn't there or is dead who he had a strong relationship with and shared this place with them.

its a person whom you never thought would be dear to your heart. That even though you no longer see or even talk to each other he will always have a soft spot in your heart. Thinking about the memories makes you want to go back because those are innocent memories when you felt your best.It means that the present is not yet convincing for you to forget those things in the past.

I think, personality, that this is about a dead love one. A man is remembering a close friend that somehow died and the man is trying to forget about his friend by sort of going down "Memory Lane" or going to where they would go alot in this case, the woods. But no matter how hard the guy tries, he can never forget his friend. So since he can't forget he just gets it out and goes kinda crazy and thinking that he sees his dead friend and getting so crazy that he kills himself and goes "Somewhere only we Know" or heaven where he sees his dead friend again.

Someone is trying to let go of the past. It also sounds like he's trying to let go of his loved ones like friends or family. To me, it sounds like someone the person was closed to died or moved away and the person has been avoiding anything that reminds him/her of that person and right after he/she left the person took a trip down memory lane and did it again sometime later.

This reminds me of my friend who is a girl and me (who is a boy). We were best friends and when we got to middle school we had till stop being friends or else people will start a rumor about us. When the song says, "somewhere only we know" I think of a place where me and my best friend can still be friends without gossip getting in the way.
