Kenny Chesney: Anything but Mine Meaning
Song Released: 2005
Anything but Mine Lyrics
Me and Mary making our way into the night
You can hear the cries from the carnival rides
The pin-ball bells and the ski-ball slides
Watching the summer sun fall out of sight
There's a...

In todays world of Facebook and Cellphones; I find it hard to believe that the subject of this song can’t continue the relationship after he leaves the next day. I would like to suggest a different twist.
He lives in Cleveland and has other obligations there that don’t allow him to continue the relationship with Mary for more than tonight. Perhaps he paid Mary to spend this special night together with him. Mary is more beautiful than the woman he is accustomed to and he can’t bare the thought of her being with other men. She is so gorgeous that he is compelled to tell her that he loves her even though they both know it isn’t true. He has one magical night to spend with the beautiful girl from all of his dreams and then it is back to the grind of everyday life. Cleveland in this song is a metaphor for returning the his dreary and ordinary life. Mary is a special treat that he has splurged on to spice up his dull life and it seems to be working. “Mary I can’t see how you could ever be, any thing but mine”; even though in reality she is anything but his. She lives in the here and now and he lives in the confined box of Cleveland.
Just a different twist than the other interpretations. -
I think this is a perfect song to describe a Summer romance between a couple who has met while vacationing in a beach town. He (the singer/storyteller) longs to be with her and make the most of his time with his new lover, but knows that realistically it can't last, as Summer comes to an end and he continues to bring up (in the chorus) how tomorrow he's leaving back to his hometown, and he'll have to say goodbye to this Summer love. But they grew close fast and he can't imagine her being with anyone but him, as it's clear feelings for each other developed fast & strong. I love how he describes the carnival rides, sand beneath her feet. You really get a feel for Summer when you hear this song. I'm sure it reminds many of us of a certain Summer that we still reflect upon, that was special to us because of someone we once met/spent time with in the Summer, but unfortunately had to say goodbye to at one point. Summer romances are a beautiful thing, but sadly not long lasting... usually because of distance between the couple, work schedules, college, other situations that make staying or being together a challenge.

There are so many things I long to do to you means he longs to have sex with her. He says he loves her and thry both laugh because they know it isnt true. She knows hes feeding her a line of bs. And he knows it too.

Not only does that song set a strong, love affect, it also shows struggle and the love of one man. Meeting a girl for the summer and ending up completely and devotionally inlove. Having to say goodbye and knowing soon, they may forget each other is the hardest thing, but in his heart she will forever be his.

This song is simply about missing a "summer love". My friend was on set when they filmed the music video for this song in Myrtle Beach SC. It's a bout taking a vacation and finding this girl named Mary in the same tourist town and quickly falling in love/lust with this girl. The only problem is it's his last day there. He is "going back to Cleveland". He hates having to say goodbye to this girl who he has met and spent his vacation getting to know her.He wishes somehow they could stay together.
