Cannonball Lyrics
Break down
Break down
[Verse 1]
I was scared to death I was losing my mind
Break down
I couldn’t close my eyes I was pacing all night
I think I found the light out the end of the tunnel
I couldn’t find the truth I was...

It's about Cory.

The song is obviously about Cory Monteith, Lea Michele's ex-boyfriend and love of her life, who died of an overdose.
The song is about her dealing with his death and how she's determined to get on and start living her life again. In the beginning she's scared to death and has a break down, because she's so devastated of her loss. However, she decides she won't hide inside anymore and instead move on with her life. She needs to find herself again and in order to do that she needs to get out in the world again. She states she "let go of the pain and the peace came quickly". This is her way of saying that she has accepted her loss and is finally ready for her new life without him.
"I chose suffering and pain in the falling rain". She's admitting to herself she has let herself suffer instead of healing. She goes on by saying "I know I gotta get out into the world again". She's finally ready to start living again. She closes the door to her old life and from this day on she'll start living again and "fly like a cannonball" as the chorus indicates. The cannonball becomes a symbol of freedom and finally letting go.
The song isn't about forgetting, but instead of accepting and dealing with your loss and eventually become strong enough to go on with your life even though you have lost someone really dear to you. And that's exactly what she does in the end.
