Linkin Park: Valentine's Day Meaning

Album cover for Valentine's Day album cover

Valentine's Day Lyrics

My insides all turned to ash / So slow
And blew away as I collapsed / So cold
A black wind took them away / From sight
And held the darkness over day / that night

And the clouds above move closer
looking so dissatisfied
but the heartless...

This song is about how he/she lost their love one by death and now the day is valentine and he/she didn't think it would be so lonely and sad on valentines day with out their love one...

"and the ground below grew colder as they put you down inside"Meaning that that was day when they buried he/she...
and the love one is describing how sad and depressing that song was

Its all about...the feeling of someone who lost his or her lover........how he/she is feeling on that special occasion......when the special person should be around, but he/she is not. A deep sense of loneliness is coming out of the song.

Lol i agree with the comment on February 14.if you want silly love songs listen to justin bieber .Linkin Park does NOT write silly love songs.their songs has a deep universal meaning.i think this song is about Chester's father who died on valentines day,its about the deep connection he had with his father.no one ever love you as much as your father and mother do.so losing one of your parents is unreplacable.

It's about Chesters dad, who died on a valentines day, right? I'm sure it's about someone dying though, because of "And the grond below grew colder, as they put you down inside"
And, the part "I used to be my own protection, but not now, cause my path has lost direction, somehow..." I think means that he's confused and he's stuck because his path has lost direction.
Well yeah, everyone can interpreter it different, but this is what I think ^^

Your all stupid, the song is about an old member from one of the bands chester was in, his friend had a heart problem and wanted to see chester but he was on tour so his schedule wouldnt let him, his friend died shortly after and chester felt horrible about it cause he felt selfish about chosing the band over him... duh, do your research

I heard this song on a Valentine's day and I understood it differently. When I heard the song I thought about the women I love and I haven't done anything about it and I lost her and when I heard this song it matched perfectly for my situation and since than every time I hear this song I think about that women and I remember this one Valentine's day.

I dont think this song refers to any girl, linkin park dont write silly little love songs and when chaz wrote this he couldnt possibly think of samantha cuz he was already happily married to tallinda. Its is about losing something which is very close to us not necessary a person. There always comes a day(in this sont: a valentines day) when you realize the value of the thing you lost.
According to the song, the person feels very lost from himself "My insides all turned to ash / So slow
And blew away as I collapsed / So cold
A black wind took them away / From sight
And held the darkness over day / that night; used to be my own protection / But not now
Cause my path had lost direction / Somehow
A black wind took you away / From sight
And held the darkness over day / That night
    "
He regrets the day when he lost whatever that thing which was very close to him "And the clouds above more closer
    looking so dissatisfied
and the ground below grew colder
as they put you down inside
but the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing; So now you're gone
    And I was wrong
I never knew what it was like
    To be alone"
the part "on a valentines day" is merely an example of the day when you regret losing something.
And it nor necessary that the person in the song is dead, he is just feeling lost from himself. And it does noot refer to samantha also because it wasnt chester alone who wrote this song, all six of them did.
P.s i just cant stand pple who try to interpret linkin park's songs as love songs(sorry) and please see the date of my interpretation (it my b'day too) thanks for reading

This song was written as Chester's Dad died on Valentines Day.
His Father was obviously one of Chester's idols for him to make a song about him. Its not on about suicide, or even a divorce in my opinion. Chester was obviously struggling with his emotions and needed to let it out in this song. It is a beautiful song when you really listen to the lyrics and think about it deeply.

this song is all about a person who lost his love and feel very lonely and depressed on valentine day.
"and the ground below grew colder
as they put you down inside"
it means when his love is buried put under the ground ,the ground on which he is standing becomes cold the clouds are becomes dark

This is my boyfriends favorite song... was wondering about meaning. My interpretation is not really an interpretation. Here it is. My brother is a music genius and a successful songwriter. His songs are very open. Songs are meant to be related to, that is what makes them sell. If it has one direct meaning, then it won't apply to such a wide range of people. Just listen to the song... Don't worry about what Chester wrote it about, let yourself apply it to anything. That just might be what he intended to do.
I'm twelve years old, by the way. You don't have to listen to me.

Chester's divorce with Samantha in early 2005. His heart was very broken, very. Obviously...he felt the love was dead, dissapeared off the face of the earth.

    "the ground below grew colder
as they put you down inside"

this leads you to believe that the person the song talks about is dead. you cant get suicide or anything out of that. it just show the sorrow the person feels as their love is put in to rest.

I never got suicide out of it. I just thought the "and the ground below grew colder
as they put you down inside" part meant, you know, he's feeling all this pain, and the reality is sinking in, so he just grows cold inside. And at the end, I see him walking down the street, carrying a briefcase or something, on his way to work, all these happy couples around him, and he can't take it, so he runs into an alley, pulls out a knife, and on that last beat, thrusts it toward his heart.

    No...

'' So now you're gone, and I was wrong''
The '' and I was wrong'' relates to the '' I never knew what it was like to be alone''.
He did have a girl on valentine's day but since the day his father died on valentine's day he never felt that alone before.

I don't think that the girl died like it said her before
"Now you're gone and I was wrong"
He accepted the fact that he made a mistake
thats why she's gone - she left him and moved on
    or something like this ..
it's an absurd situation for the writer because he's got
to spend his first Valentine's Day all by himself - something
he didn't really used to ...
