Matchbox 20: Bent Meaning
Song Released: 2000
Bent Lyrics
Pick me up and dust me off
And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk
And if I need some other love then
You give me more than I can stand
If my smile gets old and faded
Wait around, I'll smile...

The very first time I heard this song I was on my way to work & I just found out my Daddy's cancer had returned, my marriage was ending, I was having feelings for someone & I didn't know if he wanted me because of he had love feelings or just Wanted to have sex.

"Bent" is a very good song, the video is clever too, it's about knowing a girl is losing interest in you.

My wife pulled me out of hell. I knew I needed to get out of that hell. We compromised unwillingly. We made a child called Sophi. Everything has fallen apart. Thank you for your lyrics.

You are right in that it is a love song - one of Thomas' first. However, on Vh1 storytellers, Rob said he really just wrote the song to describe two co-dependent people that decide to be together just because they were both screwed up. He mentions that the band found out "bent" had alternative meanings only after it was written. In Europe it means gay, in australia it means toked. Thomas sums up that it's really written for the listener to draw their own conclusion on the meaning, it was never meant to be limited to one subject or one audience.

I am a straight fellow that loves the composition of this songs and have been a fan of Matchbox sine the beginning. Bent is a term that is slang for homosexual. The song b
says that these lovers are labeled and shunned by society and our alone. It begins with him fi ding his love that he knows is shunned and thus jaded but is asking for help from his lover along the way. His smile may grow old and faded but he asks his love to wait as he will smile again. I know nothing of Rob Thomas's sex life, but I know he has kids. But as I have gay friends this sounds like lyrics of the journey of "forbidden love".
