White Blank Page Lyrics

Can you lie next to her and give her your heart, your heart?
As well as your body, and can you lie next to her and confess your love, your love?
As well as your folly and can you kneel before the king and say ‘I’m clean’, ‘I’m Clean’?
But tell...

This might sound silly but when I heard this song the first thing I thought of was Guinevere and Lancelot. Lancelot loved Guinevere but she was married to King Arthur. He could never express his love for Guinevere. I don't think King means God like most people think because Mumford and Sons usually say God or maker and also the act kneeling before the king is part of becoming a knight. A knight of the round table has to be pure and honourable in his deeds. 'Can you kneel before the king and say "I'm clean, I'm clean!"' means giving his allegiance to Arthur with a pure heart but he is afraid it would not be honest because he loves Guinevere.

The chorus is the Lancelot asking why he's wrong to love her with all of his being. A white blank page and a swelling rage refers to the fact that he cannot tell of his love and he feels angry. You desired my attentions but denied my affections means she liked the attention he gave her but because she was married she would not allow him to show her affection or vice versa. This drove him to the brink. The last lines refer to him asking her to be honest about loving him and he will give her his whole life.

That's what the song said to me. A very passionate song.

The singer is being tortured with hurt and pure agony in hertbreak it doesn't matter how or who broke him but he is writhing in so much pain and anguish. This song portrays the feelings related with losing the one your whole life was centered around. It's not just the lyrics that are powerful but every note has been carefully constructured so that the listener can feel in their bones exactly what the heartbroken man wanted you to feel.

I think it's about a man who fell in love with another man who can't accept their love. The other man is married to a woman, but secretly knows that he's not happy with her. The singer sees him with his wife and asks him if he can love her the way he loves him. The married man wants to convince himself that he loves his wife - but he knows that his heart actually belongs to someone else. Maybe he also was angry at the other man because he never wanted to fall in love with him. It actually reminds me a lot of "Brokeback Mountain" (great movie btw ;))

I think the first poster is 100% correct. We all know Mum and Sons lyrics are heavily influenced by literary works.

It thought of it as a woman's point of view. I think its letter to himself it shows no where in the song that the girl is cheating on anyone, instead they love each other but it didn't work out of course he loves her but he has moved on.It wasn't anyone's fault but maybe she feels it was his. Which could be why he had the lyrics "where was my fault loving you with my whole heart". I also think in the beginning he might be talking about himself ling next to a girl he doesn't love the way he love the other girl.

this is what im going through and i think it's what they meant.

the guy is in love with a girl who likes his friend and not him.

the first part of the song was sung to the friend, asking if that friend could love her as much, as sincerely as he is.
the second part was sung to her, how she was so heartless toward his love, how she wants to be just friends.
"lead me to the light..." was sung to God. he is hurt, hopeless, he needs God's help.

i've been playing this song for the past few days with my guitar, i dont think it helps my heart at all. after writing this i'll try to move on from this song.

A man has lost the woman he loves to another man. This song is from one man to another. Pay special attention to the first verse. He is speaking to the other man, saying that he wishes the new guy was a better person to her than he was. And if he is, then he deserves her.

The way I interpreted it is that the girl he loved left him for another man, and he's asking if he can give her his all like he did. I think the white blank page represents virginity, and she lost it to this new guy. He's upset because he loved her so much, and she took it for granted, which tore him apart. He wants her to come clean and be truthful about how she really feels. If she will "lead him to the truth", and that truth is that she loves him, he would follow her his whole life. I do not think it has anything to do with lesbians, but that's just me .__.

I think that this song (and a lot of other M&S songs) is so unique because it can be meaningful in a romantic sense to both a completely secular and a spiritual one.

The undertone of this work connects romance with God in a strange and intimate way.

I took the song to be a crossover in meaning between a man and a woman's romantic relationship and a man's relationship with God (as observed by an outsider). At first, a lover is rejected and cannot understand why (hence the white blank page). This angers him. Later, the song shifts to love between a person and God. The person has given their love and their body to God but God has been silent. Again the person is bewildered.

The difference in the first half of the song and the second half of the song is that the person never expresses anger toward God. He says "Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life."

This is saying, basically, if you lead me to the truth and clear up this frustration and sadness and bewilderment that I've been experiencing, I will follow you.

It's about a failed realtionship. The man is still in love with the girl, who is too stupid to see that the man still loves her. The man is asking the new boyfriend/lover if he is sure that he can take care of the one he loves. I feel that the girl unfaithfully fell for this new boyfirend or he stole her away from the old one, that is why he is asking the king or God if he can truly claim that he is clean and good enough for this foolish young girl. The white blank page is a symbol of all that was good and right and clean in what he thought was a solid realtionship. However her list of faults is addiing up and coming through and he's realizing that everything he thought was real was all a horrible lie. In the end when it says lead me to the truth and i will follow you with my whole heart, that is saying he wants her to come back to what he believed and knew to be true and that they can live their life together how in his mind it's supposed to be.

I took from this that when people dont get what they want they always blame the other people. you you you when he should be ralizing that it is only him that allows himself to be angry for someone else not loving you as much as you would like them to.

I think it's about someone who was married and his wife left him for another man. his questions in the first stanza are directed at the man: do you love her or lust for her? the line about being clean, I think it means can he be judged by God and say he's clean even though partook in adultery (both parties are guilty if they knew- even if she was the actual married one.)

chorus is asking his wife why was his love not enough for her and how could she leave?

second stanza is referring to these questions above and wanting to write them a letter, but it's just a white blank page. his being on the brink and her not thinking was because she was selfishly pursuing the other man, not worried about how it was hurting her husband. she was probably using the classic response used by cheating spouses ("but you don't show me enough affection!") but when he tried, she didn't reciprocate because she was getting it elsewhere.

    chorus again.

finally, in my opinion I believe the end is about him wanting her to just be honest and tell him where it went wrong, when she stopped loving him, what caused her to look elsewhere for love when it was right there in front of her. and if she can be honest, he can find the strength to forgive.

I think the song is about about man who is ready to be committed to a relationship. He finally sees he can love her but she does not love him. He wants to go further but she denies him at every turn and he drowns in this agony. "you did not think when you sent me to the brink. You desired my attention but denied my affections." Pretty clear....

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

After reading the above interpretations, I agree somewhat with the whole "girlfriend leaving him for another woman" thing. I know a girl who was dating a guy, who loved her more than the sun, and it turns out she's lesbian. Well, he was baffled. The part about what was the problem with him loving her with his whole heart sounds just like my friend. Also, the idea about him struggling with homosexual feelings strikes a nerve; would he really write something like that? Is he gay? :) does it matter? No :)

I kind of figured it to be him being in love with this woman that he is very close to, but she is with another man. He knows this other man doesn't care for her the way he does and he does not treat her right, but there is no way for him to get her to see that. The beginning lines are him asking the other man if he can truly love her and if he has actually done no wrong.

He is very close to the girl, and when her boyfriend hurts her, he is the one she goes to. She desires his attention to her problems, but denies his affection for him.

"Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life" is him saying that if she leads him to the truth of their relationship, that if she shows him exactly what they are, how she feels about everything and everyone involved, that she is truly happy with how things are, etc., then he will support her in any decision she makes because he just wants her to be happiness.

I don't want to cheapen my interpretation, but one could relate it to an immensely strong and damaging "friend zone" relationship. But that's just how I took it.

"Can you lie next to her and give her your heart, your heart? Can yo u love her before you have sex with her?
"As well as your body, and can you lie next to her and confess your love, your love?" Can you tell her you love her or is it to difficult to say I love you but your able to take her virginity and have sex with her.
I think it means that someone had sex before marriage ('Can you kneel before the king and say "I'm clean"?') And if you love that person fully before you have sex with them."Her white blank page and a swelling rage" I think means that you just took her virginity and she is mad about it or not sure what to think about losing her virginty."You did not think when you sent me to the brink" made him angry by leading him on but not wanting what you were acting like you wanted which is sex. "You desired my attention but denied my affections" She wanted him emotionally but did not want to be sexual with him. "But tell me now, where was my fault in loving you with my whole heart?" He loved her with his whole heart and so having sex with her for her first time made sense to him but she did not feel the same way. " Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life" Asking God to forgive him for his sin and that he will follow God whith his whole life if God will lead him and forgive him.
