My Chemical Romance: The World is Ugly Meaning
Song Released: 2012
The World is Ugly Lyrics
But you're beautiful to me.
Are you thinking of me?
Like I'm thinking Of you?
I would say I'm sorry,
But I really need to go.
I just wanted you to know
That the world is ugly,
But you're beautiful to me.
Are you...

#1 top rated interpretation:First of all, this song is extremely beautiful and it means so much to me. I don't know where I'd be without it. But nobody wants to hear me complain about my life, they came here for people's guesses on what the song means. Personally, I feel like the song is saying that society is a fucked up place, and it'll be rude and judgemental and just ugly. Gerard is saying that dispite the fact that the world is ugly, he thinks that 'you' are beautiful to him. I believe 'you' is the fans. I believe this whole song was made for fans, and maybe Bandit, too. It's just a beautiful song with a great meaning, and I love it. Hope this was detailed enough lol. (Also after reading this listen to The Light Behind Your Eyes. It's also very beautiful, and it's probably the reason I'm still alive.)

#2 top rated interpretation:These are the eyes and the lies of the taken
(I think this starts off with a guy describing a girl with depression how her eyes have lies like "I'm fine" ,and the "taken" meaning he's seen eyes like hers, of those who have killed themselves)
These are their hearts but their hearts don’t beat like ours
(People have tried to save her but they don't understand what she has gone though and what the guy had experienced, and that they can never understand that pain in their hearts)
They burn ‘cause they are all afraid
(they burn as in hurt, the people who try to save her are afraid that she will take her life)
For every one of us, there’s an army of them (as the girl tries to stand against her demons, there are more )
But you’ll never fight alone
(The boy will never let her fight depression by herself)
‘Cause I wanted you to know
That the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Well are you thinking of me now (now) (he knows that the world is a bad place, but he finds her beautiful, making the world worth living in. He's wondering if he's thinking of him, hoping his love will stop her if she ever thinks about taking her life)
These are the nights and the lights that we fade in
(Being in darkness, another metaphor for depression)
These are the words but the words aren’t coming out
(He wants to tell her he loves her to save her but he's afraid it's not enough)
They burn ‘cause they are hard to say (the words hurt to say)
For every failing sun, there’s a morning after (things get better)
Though I’m empty when you go
(He is telling her that he will be lonely without her)
I just wanted you to know
That the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Are you thinking of me,
Like I’m thinking of you?
I would say I’m sorry, though
Though I really need to go
(He wants to save her but he knows he can't)
I just wanted you to know
I wanted you to know
I wanted you to know
I’m thinking of you every night, every day (he thinks of her after he leaves her, hoping she is able to keep going without her)
These are the lies and the lives of the taken (he's going over the ones he couldn't save, thinking she's next)
These are their hearts but their hearts don’t beat like ours
They burn ‘cause they are all afraid
When mine beats twice as hard
(His heart is heavy without her)
‘Cause the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Are you thinking of me
Like I’m thinking of you
I would say I’m sorry, though
Though I really need to go
I just wanted you to know
That the world is ugly (I just wanted you to know)
But you’re beautiful to me (I just wanted you to know)
Are you thinking of me
(He is reminding her to keep going, to think of him)
Stop your crying, helpless feeling
(He's telling the girl to rid herself of that feeling)
Dry your eyes and start believing
(Telling her to stop crying and believing that things get better)
There’s one thing they’ll never take from you (as long as she keeps going, her demons will never take her strength to want to live again)
(One day like this,
We’ll never be the same
Never forever
(One day she will get better, but he will fall back into depression, never knowing if he saved her)
Like ghosts in the snow
Like ghosts in the sun) -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think this song is about his daughter, Bandit. He is telling her that even when he dies, he will be there for her. He also talks about how hard life is, like, he is telling her how hard it is so she can prepare herself for the ugliness of the world.
"For every failing sun, there’s a morning after
Though I’m empty when you go
I just wanted you to know" There he tells her that no matter how bad it may gets because everyday is a new one.
"That the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Are you thinking of me
Like I’m thinking of you
I would say I’m sorry, though
Though I really need to go
I just wanted you to know" This is about how perfect she is, she shouldn't allow the World (society, media, etc.) to take her down. This is also an apollogy for leaving her (he dies) on this ugly world. He thinks of her all the time because she is her daughter.
"Stop your crying, helpless feeling
Dry your eyes and start believing
There’s one thing they’ll never take from you" Here I think it refers again of when he dies because she would obviously be destroyed, but gerard wants her to carry on. It may also refers to the things that will make her cry, but he is telling her to carry on anyway.
Plus, I think this song would be dedicated not just for Bandit but for all the fans. So yep, this is my interpretation. -
I think it is about being deeply in love with someone who is depressed.
"For every one of us there's an army of them"
Basically saying there are a lot of people out to get them for being who they are
"I just wanted you to know that the world is ugly but you're beautiful to me"
Saying that they know that the world has many mean people but that they love them -
I don't think this is about his daughter has sugar above^ I think it's about a girl/guy deep depression that can't see their self worth.
"These are their hearts but their hearts don't beat like ours"
he can relate he's got/had them feelings too.
it mentions the words not come out and hard to say. When you feel like that, that's exactly how it feels... "There's a army of them" people that don't have or understand what it's like been mentally ill.
beautiful song.

I think it is about depression and how even though MCR is gone, they want the fans with depression to know that they are loved and the world is a bad place but they dont have to feel bad.

"These are the eyes and the lies of the taken". Seems to be talking about 2 people already "taken" in relationships. "For every failing sun, there’s a morning after. Though I’m empty when you go." Every failing sun is a metaphor for having an affair, followed by that morning after feeling of regret mixed with a longing for what can never be.
‘Cause the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Are you thinking of me
Like I’m thinking of you?'
Despite all the ugliness in the world, your beauty shines. I think about you all the time. Do you think about me too?
I think the song is about 2 people having an affair despite being involved in other relationships. Wishing they could be with each other, but their circumstances won't allow it. -
If you know the original version and not the studio version, it's a little more obvious it's probably about an ex. Someone you loved no longer loves you, so they cheated on you. The pain and betrayal you feel is so strong, because you still love them. They made you feel more right in this ugly world so they wee beautiful to you. You know that you can't stay with them though. So before you leave, you tell them how much you loved them.
-
it's just my interpretation, but i honestly think they're talking to their fans.MCR do know how upset their fans will be because of their breakup and before leaving, they want them to know they'll be Always there anyway.

Gerard Way (if somebody doesnt know, he's the lead singer) said in a recent interview that he relapsed in alcohol again after the making of Danger Days. While he was this addicted, he thought about how Bandit's (his daughter) life would have been without a father. So he stopped drinking.
I think the song is about Bandit and Gerard's addiction to alcohol. -
I always kind of thought that this song was majorly about Gerard's daughter, Bandit. It does sound a lot like a dad talking to his daughter. . .
-
Honestly, I see so many posts saying the song is about relationships and I don't think it is at all. It seems like theh put too much heart and soul into this song for it to be about something as simple as that. It think it's more of a song about how everyone should always feel beautiful and be themselves, and that even though time passes (aka people die and leave, or it could also hint on MCR's break up) you can still be strong. It's a beautiful song, honestly. It's telling you that you're beautiful and you shouldn't be afraid because someone is there for you, no matter how harsh the world gets.

"Are you thinking of me?
Are you thinking of him?
You could say you're sorry
But I think you both should go"
I interprate this as that there is a boy and a girl, the girl has cheated on the boy with another and now he's saying you can say your sorry but It won't mean anything.
"There's an aching in my heart,
There's a burden in my eyes.
I could get a new start
But I'd rather learn not try.
I could find a new place
Maybe no one knows my name...
But I think it's just the thing."
This is kind of like, You ment the world to me, but now you've riped out my heart for another. I'm not even going to try to get someone else, It's not worth it. Should I just move some where else so the humiliation doesn't kill me? -
I think this is about someone who's ex-girlfriend dumped him someone else (After either cheating on him or just using him.) The speaker sees her as a light to his dull world' and is trying to tell the her that she hurt him. The speaker knows that her new boyfriend is not good enough for her, and she is not happy with him.
