Nine Inch Nails: Downward Spiral Meaning
Downward Spiral Lyrics
-
BANG.
well, if you've been following along with the rest of the concept album,
The protagonist is bent on self-destruction.
To be erased - and he did it.
BANG.
He shot himself in the head, and Mr. Self Destruct, the antagonist introduced in the first song in the album with the same name, tells us exactly what happened, in not the most heartwarming way.
The protagonist killed himself.
Of course, that begs the question of what "Hurt", the next song, is.
My personal interpretation is, since that song is so purposefully messed up and distorted, it doesn't take place in the present timeline of the album. Whether it's in the past, like a suicide note, or whether its in whatever afterlife that the protagonist doubted the existence of.
