O.A.R.: Heaven Meaning
Heaven Lyrics
-
1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:From what I've interpreted the meaning behind this song is something like this: We're all people, we're all different, we all mess up, but we all learn from our mistakes, and try to use them to better ourselves and each other. And if we can't get into Heaven as ourselves, there is no point in wanting to go. If you're a good person, with no enemies and have never been a criminal, but you didn't follow the "rules" you can't go. Kinda like saying "If I can't come as I am, I'm fine sitting outside."

(not me, i just saw this interpretation and loved it) -
I am an atheist (prefer to be called a humanist or romantic). This song is almost an anthem for non-believers in god. The song has many lines that point from the supernatural to the natural...to reality.
"Build this life by my own design"
"Everything we got is everything we need"
"Everything you want is inside your cup"
"like heaven underneath my feet"
"All I have is life"
"feels like heave out here in the street."
At every turn the song is pointing away from an outside source for spirituality and guidance. The song describes a romantic and warm life as we see it (on the street), touch it (beneath our feet), consume it (Inside a cup), and nothing more (all I have is life).
The song paints atheists as romantics...not criminals. -
I just saw this played live at an acoustic show. Marc Roberge said that this song was written because he's fed up with people being mistreated because of who they are, or having to be afraid to be themselves (he used the example of not getting into nightclub because of what you're wearing). He said he wants his children to grow up in a world where they can love themselves unconditionally, and that's where the inspiration for this song came from.

Much like everyone else has been saying, everyone is different, we're all people. And if we're not a certain way, then that makes us bad people... I think about homosexuality when I hear this song, not in a bad way of course! Cause I support gay people 100 % and think that there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with them, my brother is gay as well...
Anyways, a lot of people say being gay is a sin, and my question to those people who say it is, is "How?" How is it a sin? How is it hurting anyone else? It's not, that person isn't a bad person, nor an enemy or criminal, that person is a person, they're who they are, they can't change it. So if they HAVE to change who they are, and be unhappy to go to heaven which is supposed to be a place full of love and acceptance, then it's really not worth it.
I'm not a christian, and I love this song to death, and it describes how I feel about things. If I have to change who I am, then I dont even WANT to go to heaven. -
First off...I was raised southern babtist and told that dinosaurs did not exist. That being said...this song speaks to me on a personal level. Heaven, paradice, Zen, springland....whatever you want to call it there are many ways to get there. To me, this song is about living life with the emotions and feelings you were born with. And if anyone says you are not good enough to join them in eternity then they are not saying much about themselves. Blessed be.

I think this has to do with not being accepted. I wonder if the singer has some gay friends.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of misunderstandings about how to get to Heaven. Many people make up there own theory on how to get there. But God didn't put us here to "guess" or make up our own way to get to Heaven. He told us how in and the answer can be found in the bible. John 3:16 says: "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son-Jesus, so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life". The bible tells us that we are all sinners. Whether you are gay or straight, or whatever, we all sin. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. He was buried and he rose from the dead after the third day. The penalty of sin was paid by Jesus. If we believe that he died for our sins and rose again, we will be saved and will be able to go to Heaven. If we do not accept Jesus as our saviour, we cannot enter Heaven. God loves all people and it is His desire that every person accepts Jesus as their saviour so they can spend eternity with Him. I urge you to pray to Jesus today and ask him to be your saviour.

I think he means that you don't have to be truly religious to get into heaven. As long as you are kind and choose the high road in life you should be allowed into heaven.

The singer has love for god but shows his love in less than conventional ways. He believes if his love for god isn't enough to grant him entrance to heaven he would rather not go, because heaven exists here on Earth.
