Song Released: 2007
Build God, Then We'll Talk Lyrics
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.

-
This song is about a desperate girl who needs quick money, so she gets with this lawyer who agrees to give her a job if she gives him sex. Obviously the girl agrees, so they do it. The lawyer is married, his wife will stay because she's too close to his money to leave now. after they do it, and the lawyer leaves, an officer busts in and tells her that she has two choices: 1) to sleep with him and check out the motel a free woman or 2) get thrown in jail. The "purse" is her, holding all her get inside ready to spill over. She is NOT a whore, she's doing bad things but for her to survive
-
This song is simply about all the undercover things at go on in suburbia. I mean drugs, sex, and lies. It happens everyday but you'll be surprised what goes on behind closed doors.
-
Tbh I think the "purse" is a condom. It's pretty obvious.
-
I pretty sure it's about a woman who sleeps with a lawyer (the cheating attorney),and soon, after the lawyer leaves, the constable comes in, and sleeps with the "virgin" (It's using sarcasm for irony) and so the virgin avoids trouble.
However, the police come and she drops the bag, revealing drugs and a black book (the "purse"). The chorus"Caricature of intimacy"mocks it all. -
Theres actually a lost verse that they didn't sing, located in the booklet for the CD.
[right after "purse of a different kind"]
and here is where he entertains that proposition

I grew up in a bad part of town where I live so, I think I have this song figured out.
Its about:
Prostitution
Drugs
Affairs
Lies
In the first verse:
"It's these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Freemont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes..."
A drug house, I know of some that as in the song that draw you in. You can't turn your eyes alway. "Is it really there?" They're so ugly but somehow have a hint of beauty in them too. Asbestos and formaldehyde, I do believe can be found inside cigarettes and so on.
"Along with the people inside
What a wonderful caricature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy"
This is what these people love. They are in love with the fumes, the dilapitated state of the rooms, and the people that surround them. Not knowing what will happen next. It is all a thrill.
"Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful caricature of intimacy."
Well off men come to where they are less likely to be seen in order to cheat. The 'virgin' I think is not techinally a virgin- maybe more of a person who as never done something like, sex for money before. Or someone he is soon to work with that also does drugs. The Mrs. know her husband is cheating but she will do nor say nothing because she is there not for him but for the money. What a wondeful, twisted kind of love.
"And not to mention, the constable, and his proposition, for that "virgin"
Yes, the one the lawyer met with on "strictly business"
as he said to the Mrs. Well, only hours before,
after he had left, she was fixing her face in a compact.
There was a terrible crash (There was a terrible crash)
Between her and the badge
She spilled her purse and her bag, and held a "purse" of a different kind"
BUSTED!! Even rich people screw up. What a wonderful kind of love.
"
There are no raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses.
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things."
This is not where you will find all the wonderful things in life. Its reality. These things go on in real life. -
For what I get, maybe I am wrong, maybe not.
We are talking about a young girl (innocent) who really needs money. It tells a story of a this Mrs who is havin' sex with some Lawyer, (maybe his new boss? maybe not?)
"She's getting a job at the firm come Monday(...)moonlighting aside, she really needs his money."
Means she needs the job, but if there is another way to get more money, then she'll not think it twice, since it's clear she needs the money.
It talks about a motel and that she's virgin.
It can mean two things:
1. She's unable to get the job, so the only way to get it means sleeping with "the boss" (the lawyer)
2. What I said before, sleeping with this man will make her win more money.
I read some other interpretations...And I agree with one:
This song wants to make you understand how f*** up is the world.
What people has to do just to get a little money, how far we have to go to try having a "nice life" We are not talking about a whore, but about someone who just don't know what to do and is desperate. It's just an image, a little example, and a pretty simple "cliché" because this happens very often. -
You have to know the rest of the lyrics to completely understand what was going on. For starters, 4th and Freemont is a very shady area in Vegas. Bada, the boys are singing about their homestead. So it's not a surprise that some propositions go on here.
A girl sleeps with a lawyer to get a job at the firm, who propositioned the other is unknown, because of the use of virgin and "virgin" in the actually lyrics. After he leaves, the a policeman busts in, probably to bust her for prostitution, but she is startled and drops her purse, thus exposing the drugs.
Now the lyrics were originally continued here, including how he was going to arrest her for possession, but ended up sleeping with her instead, suggesting that maybe she really was the fake virgin she was protending to be.
The whole song can basically be described by the lyrics: a wonderful caricature of intimacy. This describes the three situations, the Mrs. Staying with her husband even though she knows he's cheating, but just staying for the money. The girl sleeping with the lawyer for the job, and then sleeping with the policeman to avoid charges. -
Ok, I'm a fan of panic! at the disco and I listened to this and wanted to know what he meant by all of it and I read some of the interpretations on this website and this is what I think. (when I say he I mean the guys who wrote the song.)
(Lyrics)
It's these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Fremont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes.
(Interpretation)
He is describing the setting of this little story..
the story takes place in a motel on the corner of 4th and fremont in Los Vegas
The motels are “un-appealingâ€, and he takes about how disgusting they are.
Simple enough.
(Lyrics)
Along with the people inside
What a wonderful caricature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy
(Interpretation)
He’s saying that the people inside the motels are just and disgusting as the motels themselves.
“What a wonderful caricature of intimacy†means What a wonderful way to describe intimacy, he is being sarcastic because what is going on in the motel is far from intimacy.
(Lyrics)
Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful caricature of intimacy.
(Interpretation)
The Virgin, has a rosery in her lingerie, so ill guess she is catholic. She is getting a job at the lawers firm, only because she is going to sleep with him. The Mrs. Is the lawers wife. His wife knows he is cheating but stays with him because she needs his money.
(Lyrics)
And not to mention, the constable, and his proposition, for that "virgin"
Yes, the one the lawyer met with on "strictly business"
as he said to the Mrs. Well, only hours before,
after he had left, she was fixing her face in a compact.
There was a terrible crash (There was a terrible crash)
Between her and the badge
She spilled her purse and her bag, and held a "purse" of a different kind.
(Interpretation)
It says “virgin†because she isn’t anymore. The cop went to the motel and was going to arrest her for prostitution (Hookers hang by those motels) and it looked like she was a hooker because she had just had sex with the lawyer and now she is ‘fixing her face’ (fixing her make-up). It says the constable (cop) and his proposition, his proposition was for her to sleep with him instead of him arresting her. The crash was the “virgin†sleeping with the cop. And the “purse†of a different kind is the cop paying her for the sex because after all he thinks she is a hooker.
(Lyrics)
There are no raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses.
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.
(Interpretation)
There are no raindrops and girls in white dresses means That life is not all perfect.
Sleeping with roaches (note that is it plural) means her sleeping with them.
The taking guesses at the shade of the sheets before all the stains means, guessing what the color of the sheet was before all the hookers who had sex on left their stains, because (I'm assuming) it’s a “6 hour fuck me†motel. And add a few more of your least favorite things, means adding your “stains†on the sheets just like the people before you did.
Morals now a days are fucked up….and this is an example. -
It's these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Freemont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes.
-----this means there is a dirty motel, appealing only because no one would think to find someone of a lawers stature there
Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful caricature of intimacy.
-----there is a lawyer and a VIRGIN this is her first time people, and she has a necklace with beads and a cross in her lingerie, she's getting a job at the firm the lawyer works at and she's sleeping with him so she will get good benefits, the lawyers wife probably knows that he is cheating on her but she will stay with him anyways because she needs his money, saying that's a wonderful charicature of intamacy is sarcasim
-----the lawyer left the dirty motel and the "virgin" was in her car fixing her makeup when a car crashes into her car, the constable (police officer) gets out to make sure she's ok but sees her bag and finds out she's underaged and what she did with the lawyer by finding something incriminating in her bag
Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.
-----this is just a reference that because of what happened there is nothing happy anymore only sleeping with roaches (the dirty motel) and guessing what color the sheets were before all the stains where there (their spilled bodily fluid) and more of your least favorite things are better than what happened
hoped I helped! -
Alright. I haven't seen any comment worth anything. I am sorry. I came to this site to see if there was any additional point to what I already knew. first off, ryan ross and the rest of panic are huge chuck palahniuk fans. He is an author who can make you hate your life - but he is a very intelligent writer who uses symbols and themes consistently throughout his novels. recently, I have read survivor by chuck palahniuk. The plot of the story is not important, but I can see similarities between this song and the book in the symbols used. early in the book (survivor)palahniuk describes the main character's desperate situation and his pointlessness while simulatneoulsy describing his job of organizing fake flowers. Here he compares the pointlessness of life to the fake-ness of life. He basically he says life is fake without actually saying it. "What does fake flowers have to do with this song?" you may ask. well, when describing the flowers, palahniuk makes references to formaldehyde which is used on the fake flowers, and the asbestos which is in the walls of the building that the character is in. These to substances are mentioned in the opening part of "Build God, Then We'll Talk." Theres no way that's coincidence. And you must realize, that this is only TWO words in the song. and they carry so much meaning. In each song, panic is trying to say something. They arent just telling a story about a virgin and a lawyer. The "argument" about whether the girl in this story is a virgin or not does not matter. AT ALL. The point remains that awful, impure acts like this "terrible crash," (which is the actual sexual acts that take place, not a door crashing down or whatever), are happening in a world so "christianized," (seen by the reference to a rosary) and a world so happy and good, seen by the reference to the musical, "sound of music." There is so much more that could be said about this song, but I am sick of typing. read survivor by chuck palahniuk if you really want to know the point of this song. or any other panic! at the disco song for that matter. I wonder how much space this comment will take up...
-
When there was a terrable crash she hit a cop car and when she "held a purse of a differint kind" she was talking about her womb with a baby in it (she died along with the people inside)
-
Oh yeah and the virgin only had sex with him for the job
-
People there is no such thing as the trilogy!! It something made up in your head!
Anyway this song is about how horrible a motel is.
"It's these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Fremont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very eyes."
"Along with the people inside"
The people are horrible too.
"what a wonderful catiriciture of intamacy"
I had to look those words up but it means
what a wonderful picture of sexual relations
"Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful caricature of intimacy."
basically tonight guest range from a lawyer and a virgin
i don't really get the second line but it means Accessorizing with a series of prayers tuck inside her underwear.? no clue what tht's supposed to mean
shes getting a job from the lawyer on monday and his wife is staying with him. He is cheating on her with the "virgin" and she knows but she doesn't want a divorce because she needs his money. and yeah yeah bad ppl.
She spilled her purse and her bag,
and held a "purse" of a different kind."
Then the lawyer goes to the virgin and the virgin tells on the wife to the constable (police) for having drugs so the police is about to arrest her. the wife says tht she'll cheat on her husband with him if he doesn't arrest her so he agrees.
so its basically about these bad ppl. -
If you want the real meaning of Panic! songs, look at their titles. Build God, Then We'll Talk. You can't build god. It's impossible. If you're religious, you believe a divine creature created us so we can't create them. So that's not what they mean.
But if you look at it from a different angle. Don't take it literally. It's sarcasm. It's saying go through the stuff I have; put yourself in my shoes. We'll see if you make the same decisions.
The 'virgin' isn't really a virgin, just the personification of innocence and desperation. She's a girl trying to make in this world; pull herself up from whatever slump she's in.
She's obviously never done this before so she's not a hooker.
