    It's quite possible this song is also about the breakup of Blink-182. The songs lyrics read "And you smile while your twisting the knife in my stomach", which may refer to Tom's treatment to Mark. "So long forgotten friends, no, you don't know the difference" could refer to the former friendship of Mark and Tom.

    PS: THERE IS THE SUGGESTION THAT THIS SONG IS ALSO ABOUT BLINK 182'S RUPTURE. THIS IS A READING THAT DOES NOT TAKE THAT IN CONSIDERATION, ONLY THE SONG LITERAL MEANING.

    THE SONG IS ABOUT A BETRAYAL. THIS IS ONLY CLEAR AT THE END, BECAUSE THE STORY IS REVEALED LITTLE BY LITTLE. HERE'S HOW IT FOLLOWS:

    THE SONG STARTS DESCRIBING THE FEELING OF GOING BACK AND FINDING OUT YOU DON'T BELONG ANYMORE. THE SECOND LINE SAYS THAT WHATEVER WAS "HOME" BEFORE HAD AN UNBEARABLE MOOD NOW.

    When the last remaining light was starting to filter
    It seemed the perfect time to step into the future

    WHEN EVERYTHING WAS FALLING APART, THE OBVIOUS CONCLUSION WAS TO ESCAPE.
    WHILE IT IS CLEAR THE SENSE OF MOVING ON, THE MENTION OF THE FUTURE PROBABLY MEANS TO END SOMETHING AND START SOMETHING ELSE.

    Your mouth's a smoking gun

    til everything is gone

    IN THE SECOND PART THE FOCUS GOES TO A PERSON. THE WRITER FIRST CALL OUT THE LIES THAT ARE BEING TOLD BY THIS PERSON (YOUR HEART), AND THEN PROBABLY MEANS THAT THE PERSON SAID SOMETHING THAT IS EVIDENCE TO WHAT THE WRITER IS ACCUSING(SMOKING GUN, THAT HAD JUST SHOT).
    AGAIN ON THE LAST TWO VERSES THE WRITER ACCUSES THE PERSON OF DOUBLE ACTING AND SAYS IT WON'T STOP HURTING HIM UNTIL THERE'S NOTHING LEFT.

    THE WRITER, ADMITTING HIS WEAKNESS, ACCUSES THE PERSON FROM TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THAT

    THE WRITER PUTS ALL BEHIND HIM BUT STILL IS LEFT WITH THE DOUBT

    So long forgotten friends, no, you don't know the difference
    Between love and submission, and I'm not that obedient

    UNCOVERING THE "PERSON", THE WRITER POSSIBLY REFERS THE FEELING "SO LONG FORGOTTEN FRIENDS" TO THE OTHER PERSON NOT HIMSELF AND THEN ACCUSES THIS FRIEND AGAIN OF TAKING ADVANTAGE OF HIM SAYING THAT HE TRY TO CONTROL PEOPLE THAT ARE FRIENDS WITH HIM.
    HE CLOSES SAYING THAT HE IS NOT UP FOR THIS TYPE OF FRIENDSHIP.

    And she's trying to sleep it off
    With her head on my shoulder
    And I'm trying to keep it out
    Of my thoughts when I hold her (Take all you can from me)

    NOW WE FIND OUT THE FRIEND IS A FEMALE (ITS NOT SUGGESTED THAT THIS "FRIENDSHIP" MEANS A ROMANCE). WE ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THE SONG SO FAR WAS HIS THOUGHTS WHILE SHE IS TRYING TO WASH IT AWAY WITH SLEEPING.
    HE IS TRYING TO KEEP THOSE THOUGHTS OUT OF HIS MIND

    And she's trying to sleep it off
    With her head on my shoulder (I'm led so easily)
    And I'm trying to figure out
    Of my thoughts when I hold her

    WE FINALLY UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE PICTURE WITH THIS LINE. THE GIRL DID SOMETHING TO HIM BUT SHE STILL DOESN'T KNOW HE KNOWS WHAT SHE DID. IT'S DEFINITELY A BETRAYAL BUT IT'S NOT CLEAR WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

    I agree that this is about the breakup of blink 182. All the lyrics refer to tom's treatment of mark. You may wonder what does "shes trying to sleep it off, with her head on my shoulder" have to do with it. That refers to mark's wife.

    Not every song they write is about the break up, Mark only wrote one song about the break up.

    Actually Mark said that this was about a neighboard he used to have, but those quotes you leave may refer to tom..who knows..
