Lycanthrope Lyrics

I woke up at the end of a long, dark, lonely year
It's bringing out the worst in me
I hear your voice start breaking in fear
When the lights go down

And I still feel you looking over my shoulder
Your sinking guilt and approaching...

Lycanthropy is a disorder where people, usually in areas where they do not seem to be around many people, feel as if they have been possessed by wolves, or are becoming wolves. Does this have to do with the song? I'm not sure. But i doubt this song is about tom.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO UNDERSTAND THE SONG IS NOT ABOUT AN WOLF OR WEREWOLF. BUT IT CAN BE THE FEELING OF A "WEREWOLFED" MIND. IT'S DEFINITELY ABOUT A CHANGE AND ABOUT DEATH. MOST LIKELY ABOUT THE ASSASSINATE OF SOMEBODY BUT ALSO ABOUT THINKING ABOUT DYING.

I woke up at the end of a long, dark, lonely year
It's bringing out the worst in me
I hear your voice start breaking in fear
    When the lights go down

THE WRITER STARTS DESCRIBING HOW THE PAST YEAR AFFECTED HIM. THE MOST LIKELY MEANING OF THE LAST TWO LINES IS THAT HE IS SCARED OF THE END(EXPRESSION "LIGHTS GO DOWN"...AS ON A CONCERT, THEATER), THE VOICE IS FROM SOMEONE FAMILIAR, IT CAN BE SOMEBODY WHO ALREADY IS AT THE PLACE HE DOESN'T WANT TO GET TO.

And I still feel you looking over my shoulder
Your sinking guilt and approaching nightmare
And I know none of us will survive
    Because I know everything

ON THE SECOND PART THE WRITER DESCRIBES THE PERSON HE BRIEFLY MENTIONED BEFORE. THE PERSON IS NOT THERE ANYMORE BUT HE STILL REMEMBERS THIS PERSON WATCHING OUT FOR HIM OR FOR WHAT HE WAS DOING, REMEMBERING THIS PERSON BURDEN (SINKING GUILT) AND A TERRIBLE EVENT THAT HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER (APPROACHING NIGHTMARE).
HE CLOSES REMEMBERING HIMSELF THAT LIFE IS EPHEMERAL AND EVERYONE WILL DIE EVENTUALLY

    Alright

PROBABLY A IRONY RELATING TO THE VERSE ABOVE, MEANING THAT NOT EVEN HE BELIEVES HE ACTUALLY KNOWS EVERYTHING

And my dear I need you to move a little faster
This second counts as the rest of your life
Your final word and an itchy finger
    And then it's taken away

THE SAME MOOD IS BROUGHT BY THE WRITER WITH A NEW VISION. IT CAN BE RELATED TO CARPE DIEM, THE WRITER IS TELLING THE OTHER PERSON TO LIVE RIGHT NOW, THIS SECOND. HE IS ON A RUSH TO LIVE LIFE BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT SOON WE CAN REACH THE END (FINAL WORDS IS WHAT YOU SAY BEFORE YOU GET KILLED).

And we'll be beaten down without mercy or meaning
I turn my face to a careless skyline
I'm searching hard for a sign from heaven
    But they've forgotten me here

ON THIS PART THE WRITER APPEARS TO BE DOUBTING OF HEAVEN, OR AT LEAST THE FEELING THAT GOD DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIM ANYMORE. HE SAYS LIFE IS TAKEN AWAY AND HE CAN'T FIND AN EXPLANATION ALTHOUGH THE IS LOOKING FOR IT.

You can just stop talking, I get it
I hear your silence loud and clear
I know it's barely a thought but it'll see us through
I'm only setting you free so just let it happen
Just let it happen, no need to fear
Yeah you can just stop talking, I get it

ITS NOT COMPLETELY CLEAR TO WHOM THE CHORUS IS BEING DIRECTED TO (GOD, THE PERSON WHO DIED, OTHERS) BUT ITS DEFINITELY ABOUT MOURNING, ABOUT ACCEPTING DEATH.

    Sex, fuck, and fluorescent lighting
A hollow point on an angry bullet
We're on the teeth of a crocodile
We're in the mouth of the gun

THIS IS A PART WHERE THE ANGER IS POURED DOWN. THE WRITER TALKS ABOUT A SHOT, WHICH PROBABLY KILLED THE PERSON AND THEN REMEMBERS, AT THE LAST TWO LINES, WE ARE ON THE EDGE (OF DEATH)

And sometimes at night I feel I'm just a broken vessel
An instrument with a darker purpose
I'm at the throat of the young and the helpless
Because they've got nothing to say

HE CLOSES THE SONG WITH THE FEELING OF BEING NOW EMPTY AND BROKEN, BUT ALSO FILLED WITH MUCH ANGER (INSTRUMENT WITH A DARKER PURPOSE). AND THEN HE TURNS IT INTO GLOBAL SAYING THAT THIS SONG IS THE VOICE OF PEOPLE FEELING THE SAME WAY HE DOES (I'M THAT THE THROAT OF THE YOUNG AND THE HELPLESS).

This song's about a group of kids who are from God. They have a 'shelter', & are protecting hundreds of others. This is during martial law in America("we're in the mouth of the gun". "& we'll be beaten down without mercy or meaning"). These people are in hiding from being sent to a FEMA camp. Modern day holocaust. It's occult related. The subliminals are meant to corrupt the children of God.

A Lycanthrope is essentially a werewolf- Keep this in mind.

Throughout the song, Mark makes allegorical connections between relationships and a werewolf's thirst for humans. For example, when he goes "I need you to move a little faster"; "your final word and an itchy finger"; "a hollow point on an angry bullet."

It is difficult to really go in depth with this without going into the human condition and interpersonal relationships of either intimate or less intimate statuses. Regardless, Lycanthrope is a song in which a metaphor of werewolves and prey is used for a lover and the loved.

For those who have heard of Blink 182, check out the song "Stockholm Syndrome," which has a similar theme of the despairing side of a relationship

e.g. "You're cold with disappointment/ While I'm drowning in the next room/ The last contagious victim of this plague between us/ I'm sick with apprehension/ I'm crippled from exhaustion/ And I dread the moment when you finally come to kill me" <- this is much more straight forward.

Well, lycanthrope is the study of wolves, not werewolves just plain wolves so..
It could mean anything, it could be called that just to hide the fact its about tom, but most likely it has a hidden meaning, that they didnt want us to know, but to guess about..

It sounds like it could be either. Mark already wrote Lillian and no it isn't about Tom, is it possible Lycanthrope is also about Tom? Perhaps.

I don't think it's about Tom, your thinking into it to much.

From my understanding a Lycanthrope is a person that turns into a werewolf, which in the song makes sense [when he says this second counts for the rest of your life].

I'm not saying its right but I've heard this interpretation before and it could be.

This song is about the time after the Blink break up and how hard it was on him. The first line -- " I wake up at the end of a long, dark, lonely year/It's bringing out the worst in me."

    The chorus is about Tom.
"You can just stop talking, I get it" is about how Tom was always saying how AVA was going to be the best band ever.
"I hear your silence loud and clear" is about when Tom stopped talking to Mark and Travis after the Blink break up.
"I'm only setting you free so just let it happen" is Mark saying to Tom that he's done with him and all of his bullshit.
