Primus: Green Ranger Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Green Ranger Lyrics
Stepped up and showed me lots of things
It liquefied my eye and sliced me up like pie
Now at night my right ear always rings
I took a ride with the Green Ranger
Things weren't quite what I had...
-
I'm sure someone has already thrown this out. It is quite simple, most sheets of LSD have artwork on them. People tend to name it based on that. Some of my favorites are window pane, dancing skeleton, mother earth
-
I think this songs about a hallucination some one had after smoking to much cannabis. Or it could be about practicing karate with the guy who played the Green Power Ranger.
-
This song was for sure inspired by some sort of drug trip Les was on. I doubt it was LSD, but some other chemical hallucinogen, as I've never heard anyone call LSD "Green Ranger." This song is probably not related to Over the Electric Grapevine because Green Ranger sounds like a bad trip, whereas Grapevine was fun.
After Les sings "that's the night I nearly lost the plot" he switches voices to something deeper and more sinister. The words that mumble out of this voice are confusing and muddled. In Les' fried state, it's possible he was hearing voices that almost made him "lose the plot." Psychedelics can be very powerful. You can learn a lot, but you have to be careful about you take with you back to reality.
Also, Claypool didn't damage his hearing in a car crash, it was a scuba diving accident, some sort of bullshit with his air pressure or something. I hear it is a pretty common issue for scuba divers, makes me reluctant to ever try. -
This song, I beleave, coincide with "Over the Electric Grapevine" which is about a road trip him and a friend took a long time ago.

Ever thought about "Lord of the Rings"?

Thats a really good point... but knowing Les hes well very odd. But thats why i like his stuff! But anywho knowing him he come up with some crazy shiz! So its hard to know what he means but at the same time you know exactly what hes talking about.
I've seen him before hes amazing! Hes also one of my favourite.
Primus and Les Claypool albums. -
Just to add, Les lost hearing in his right ear after a car accident many years ago.
He says he 'took a ride' with the Green Ranger. Perhaps the crash 'sliced him up like pie'?
Perhaps this song is about that night. Perhaps he was under the influence of drugs when this happened. -
[Hint] US Army Ranger
-
He calls the Green Ranger 'it', which leads me to believe he's talking about a drug.
Liquify my eye and slice me up like pie are the crazy feelings you get when on said drug (It sounds like acid to me). Further evidence: "It electrifies the night, and amplifies the sight" - bang on with acid effects. Some people have been known to be mentally damaged by excessive acid use, and "losing the plot" is talking about being changed (negatively/permanently) by this drug.
I'm not sure why his ear would always ring - probably some Les history I'm unfamiliar with.
But yeah- creepy song, but a great one. Good stuff, Primus.
Pig masks are just for yokes. -
In some concert footage, Les wears a pig mask so I am thinking it is about a pig who goes to the slaughter house. The Green Ranger is the farmer in his green John Deere over-alls who comes to take him. It wasn't what this poor pig was expecting. He got electrocuted. His nostril hairs burned out. His eyes dissolved, and he was sliced up for bacon. A dark and haunting song with the deep and constant notes on Les' electric bass violin thing. I love it.
