Too Many Puppies Lyrics

Too many puppies are being shot in the dark.
Too many puppies are trained not to bark.
At the sight of blood that must be spilled so that
We may maintain our oil fields.
Too many puppies
Too many puppies are taught to heal.
Too many puppies...

idiots once again. i'm also the guy callin you idiots on the my name is mud interpretation. just like puppies are trained, so are soldiers. they do what they are told. the military is a method of indoctrination if you haven't figured it out yet. and don't get me wrong. i support our soldiers and america but i'm anti government and believe most of these wars are started by us. it doesn't matter what year they performed the song. these people have been doin these things for years. so in turn, the song is an anti war song. period. doesn't matter which war. ALL WAR. and that too many innocent people are killed fighting for the wrong reasons. wow. i lost my legs in the war. well at least i received a shiny badge upon my return to america. wake up people. think about it. not just about this song but about the war effort in general.

I believe the first sign that culture is not your friend is when some idiots strap some armor and a gun to ya and send you to a foreign country to fight. Who wants to die for no reason? A big shot in the dark....

Have you ever heard the term "dogs of war" or "war dogs." Well this song is saying that well its saying soldiers aren't dogs because they're so young. They're puppies and Primus is saying that they shouldnt be sent to war because they haven't fully "became dogs" and truly lived life very long. It's sad. In America, you can go to war at 18 but you can't buy a beer...

Actually this song was played live in 89, before even Operation Desert Shield was launched. So it's just about war in general.

What I meant by that was the Gulf War, not the war in Iraq so much seeing as it was mostly in Kuwait.

The song is definitely about war but not about the war in Iraq, the song is from their first album (Fizzle Fry) from 1990 and has since appeared on Rhinoplasty (1998). The song also definitely talks about how we're sacrificing too many soldiers (ref: too many puppies, with guns in their hands). Plus if you watch the video it begins with young men having their heads buzzed in the typical military-style haircut.

A song by the bizarre but extremely talented band Primus.....seemingly about having too many puppies is what's called an exaggerated metaphor. The idea of cute puppies in overabundance is actually the other side of the allusion to the war in Iraq.

There's too many puppies....being killed in the dark.....too many puppies being told not to bark. The stream of our soldiers being sent over to the Middle East for a lost cause is not waning despite huge defiance of the war, and they're being killed left and right with little knowledge of it, us being left in the dark of the attrocity of the war. Puppies being told not to bark, meaning they follow their duty admirably, but as a result the danger of the situation consumes them and they aren't getting the help they need.
