Stipe's just reading the liner notes from an old gospel album the band found in a recording studio.
This is my favorite of the REM songs because they illustrate that a song can come from anywhere.
It's also a testament to the talent and skill of the band to make a song (and a good one at that) from seemingly nothing.
It's like what people say about the acting ability of Sir Lawrence Olivier and how good he was.
Liner notes? Really?
Extraordinary.
