I’m not going to over analyze this song, I feel its just about relationships, ANY kind of relationships. I told my son’s this our “anthem” there are some intricate meanings, “ even joined in bonds of love we’re linked together by such slender threads”. That line brought so much emotion in me that disagreements, or even death will break that “ slender thread “ . The music, damn the music adds so much to this song! My interpretation, I see everyone has their own.

This song speaks to everyone being alone on life’s journey, but all of us craving a real connection. “Each one’s life a novel no one else has read.” When we do connect, it can be fragile and brief. “Even joined in bonds of love, we’re linked to one another by such slender threads.” “We are planets to each other, drifting in our orbits to a brief eclipse”.
Ultimately, the song is hopeful for the future. “...the spaces in between leave room for you and I to grow.” Neil Peart truly understanding that without gaps, we would never feel the need to change and grow.
