Sarah McLachlan: Adia Meaning
Song Released: 1998
Adia Lyrics
Adia I know I let you down
Don’t you know I tried so hard
To love you in my way
It’s easy let it go…
Adia I’m empty since you left me
Trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
To see...

My interpretation is that it's about the complexities of a lesbian relationship, from cultural and personal perspectives. The woman Adia has pain from somewhere in her past that the singer wishes she could help her with, but has sadly (but I assume wisely) concluded that she is not able to. Adia may have interpreted this as the singer's collusion with the dominant, homophobic culture in its quest to deny and sabotage lesbian relationships. That's further pain for Adia, which is further pain for the singer. Yet, the issue is that the singer personally can't function in the relationship, to help Adia. The singer wants to clearly and compassionately communicate this to Adia. I think she succeeded.

there are several theories about Adia ..1.it's about sarah's relationship with her best friends boyfriend who Sarah eventually married 2.Adia means helper in Arabic and Adia is sarah's alter ego personified into Adia the helper always helping others but forgettingself. 3.
