#1 top rated interpretation:There are two sides to the song. The side of the ‘scary monster’, and the side of the ‘nice sprite’. They cannot understand each other, as they are two separate creatures with different languages. The side of the monster is shown when you play the song forwards, and the side of the sprite is shown when you play the song in reverse. When forwards, the ‘scary monster’ says, “Look at me, I’m a coward too, you don’t need to hide my friend, I am just like you.”
When you play the song in reverse, the ‘nice sprite’ is says, “I’m not just like you, you don’t need, I’m not just like you”, in denial of the monsters accusations that he is just like him. The sprite believes himself to be nice, perfect. He doesn’t want to believe that he is anything like the monster, and the monster doesn’t understand why the elf acts ignorant. The dubstep in between is them trying to communicate, but not having any success.
There is one last point of view in the song, which is the child, who is sitting on her bed in her room. The monster and sprite are fighting under her bed, and when the child hears monster, she screams “Oh my god!”, and when the song is in reverse (when the sprite talks) she screams, “Oh, No more! Who’s there?” Scary monsters and Nice sprites explained, everyone. -
I believe “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” represents one’s internal struggle with him/herself to accept themselves unconditionally, whether it be their “scary monster” side or their “nice sprite” side, while living surrounded by other people who hide their true selves for the sake of not being judged. People’s flaws and gifts form a special harmony, though it becomes discordant if people try to reject one side or the other. The lyrics at the end, “Look at this / I’m a coward too / You don’t need to hide my friend / For I am just like you” mean something that I find very wise: People are cowards, for they are afraid to show who they really are. Everyone hides themselves sometimes, no matter who you are. But this person has found clarity. He is reaching out to the other people who have not yet accepted who they are. He tells them they don’t need to hide themselves. They won’t be judged by him, for truly, deep down, despite our differences and flaws – we are all the same. We are all human.

As well as the interpretation from yesterday about the monster telling the sprites that he's just like them.
Perhaps it's his way of telling his listeners that he is just like them and that he too has problems, fears, doubts, hopes, dreams, etc. In a basic sense he could be telling his fans that he can relate to the troubles that are in the listener's everyday life. -
Ok, what that one guy says about the chimes being the nice sprites & the drops being the scary monsters telling the nice sprites not to be afraid of them is mostly true, but do you know WHY that is? At the end of the song (also all the jibberish throughout the song played backwards), it says something along the lines of, "You Don't need to hide, my friend, for I'm just like you." I'm guessing, like he said, the monsters are telling the sprites not to hide, because in the end, they are all the same.

the chimes are the nice sprites and the drops are the scary monsters telling the sprites not to be scared of them :)
