System of a Down: Highway Song Meaning
Highway Song Lyrics
You love to love the fear,
I never want to be alone,
I've forgotten to.
The road keeps moving clouds,
The clouds become unreal,
I guess I'll always be at home,
Do you want me to try,
Directing your night.
An exit lights...

#1 top rated interpretation:I believe that Highway Song is a reference to life in general, about how it resembles a highway in some aspects, such as how long it stretches and how how quickly it goes by, especially when we, the drivers, are distracted or are occupied by something else that holds our attention. Also, just as highways have numerous signs and other distractions that may lead us off the main path and down new roads, so does life have many distractions and "side paths" that may or may not leads us to bigger and better things ... we may just end up getting lost.
I also believe that by saying "Our days are never ever coming back", Serj is saying that once we've done something, we can't really take it back, just like once we've reached a certain destination on the highway, we can't immediately go back and try it again. However, history does repeat itself, just like drivers repeat their routes on the same highways over and over again. And by saying "Do you want me to try directing your life?" I believe Serj is speaking of those same signs, and about how they're not only to blame. By asking the question, responsibility of what happens next also falls onto the shoulders of the driver. He can say no and continue on his own path, or agree and become responsible of whatever he finds on this new path, wherever the sing lead him.
In conclusion, life is like a highway - long, easily distracted, fun to sing songs on, but nevertheless always leads us to some kind of destination. -
i thinkit is about an old person who is driving on a highway and he remembers when he was young and he is sad because all that is over *our days are never coming bak*

It's refering to The fall of mankind when he sings "Our days are never coming back."

Appearing on Steal This Album! , this song seems to correlate a long highway with a lifetime of experiences.
