Talking Heads: The Road to Nowhere Meaning
The Road to Nowhere Lyrics
BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'VE BEEN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE KNOWIN'
BUT WE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE'VE SEEN
AND WE'RE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT
AND THE FUTURE IS CERTAIN
GIVE US TIME TO WORK IT...

We’re all going somewhere to meet immediate needs but in the grand scheme we’re not really going anywhere except where life takes us. We’re on a road to nowhere specific and it’s alright because that’s just how life works. Along the road we’re going to interact with a lot of people. Some of these encounters may be fleeting, others will last a lifetime. That’s why the road to nowhere is wonderful and joyous. Without it we wouldn’t have a mechanism to create, build and enjoy the meaningful relationships we’ll have in our lives. It doesn’t matter where we’re going as long as we’re going with the ones we love and maybe picking up a few friends along the way.

This is the ultimate atheist anthem. A song for people who know that we are all just mucking about here in life from birth to death. There’s no deeper meaning to existence, no afterlife, just this finite amount of time we have to be alive, a life granted through sheer pot luck by the universe, the greatest lottery you can ever imagine if you consider all the people who have gone before and had sex and made babies to eventually make YOU possible.
