The Chainsmokers: You Owe Me Meaning
You Owe Me Lyrics
I don't really say this that often
But there's something that the papers forgot
Every time I read them, I know I feed them
But I know, they're painting but they can't leave a mark
Because my friends don't read the papers
And they...

#1 top rated interpretation:The meaning is three fold, fuller explanations below but; depressed person wants to die, media doesn't help in any way, shape, or form, if you also want to die, you aren't alone in this.
He's depressed, he want's to die. I you take his poison and he's dead than a) you owe him for your own release, because it obviously works, b) you are a reporter, and owe him for the article, or possibly c) you helped feed his depression.
When he reads the papers he feeds both his insecurities therefore also his depression, and also causing erratic behaviour (from himself) which feeds more articles and insecurity. Which makes him decide to read the papers to see if there are articles about him, and if so what they say. If there are none, he means nothing and should die, if they say mean things, he should die, if they say good things, they don't really see him and he should just die.
BUT! If you feel like that, you are definitely not alone; he feels like that too. And you know, the people who care? They don't care about what the papers say.
Basically. -
So I think that this song is about having friends who don’t pay attention to you - ‘and they don’t really care if we’re awesome, or not’
‘You don’t know me’ - their friends don’t ask about them or understand them.
‘It gets dark inside my head’ the singer is suffering from depression or anxiety.
‘Check my pulse and if I’m dead’ this probably means mentally dead, reaching the worst possible point of depression.
‘If I’m dead you owe me’ this sentence refers to his friends, who don’t try and help him through his depression, so they owe him.
At the start of the song, when it mentions the papers, I think that the papers are a metaphor for feelings and thoughts shown by the singer, because papers show news -
When The lyrics goes, " Check my pulse, and if I'm dead, you owe me," I think it means that if he or any of us are dead MENTALLY and its caused by other's actions or words that, that person owes them for their downhill in mental health. The vampire styled in the official video is for showing viewers that the dinner guests get revenge for what they did to Alex & Drew.
-
It is a person who will blame the news reporters or media if something happens to them. I guess the previous interpretation, completely explained this song. Agree, basically people don't care what the papers say.
Didn't listen and watch this song -
I think the videoclip is inspired by the lyrics of the song. Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are vampires in the clip, so I think you owe me means that the guys ate their guests, so they give them food.
-
I think he blames the people who are at the table for making him famous. When all he wanted was to make music but not be in the spotlight. It's unfortunately the price for being a musician
-
Oh and the papers he’s talking about could be the music, or his diagnosis. When he feeds them, it only adds up to what the papers say about him. And when he says if I’m dead, you owe me, it means that if he does die, it’s our fault. Which is a characteristic of people with depression. They tend to blame others for their actions, such as in the series “13 Reasons Why.”
-
Just because he’s famous and has the life many of us want, doesn’t mean he doesn’t get depressed himself.
-
This is a very good song but I don't what the heck it means.Somebody explain.More like "AMERICA EXPLAIN!"
