The Civil Wars: C'est la Mort Meaning
C'est la Mort Lyrics
Hold your breath until you see the light
You can sink to the bottom of the sea
Just don't go without me
Go get lost where no one can be found
Drink so long and deep until you drown
Say your goodbyes but...
-
This song is clearly about staying with someone, no matter whether they're alive or not, or how they'll die.
'[Such is life], [such is death], you and me forevermore.'
This also seems to include suicide.
'Swan dive down... go get lost... say your goodbyes' all imply a wilful action -that is to say, the person being sung to wishes to swan dive to their death, planning this by saying their goodbyes.
The singer also completely disregards any possibility of living without their significant other or friend, not mentioning it even once. After all, they are walking down the endless road together, until they meet the angels.
There is also, perhaps, a conflict or desperation in the singer's words, as though their loved one is suicidal or severely ill, furthermore on the edge of death. It is as though the singer is being forced to prepare for the other's death, and is in denial. This, of course, would be a very emotional time, and the singer could very well decide that living in a world without this person is far worse than them both not living. This is a scary notion -that one person's existence is entirely dependant on another's, and it is regrettably understandable in such a situation that the singer would be close to taking their own life, if the "need" were to arise. -
I think the song title "C'est la mort" is a play on the French, "C'est l'amour".
It's about following who you love wherever they go, even to death, and not being able to survive without them.
"Cross your heart to take me when you leave.
Don't go... Please don't go. Don't go without me"
