The Civil Wars: Falling Meaning
Falling Lyrics
'Cause I've been holding your hand
Haven't you noticed me drifting
Oh, let me tell you I am
Tell me it's nothing
Try to convince me
That I'm not drowning
Oh let me tell you I am
Please, please tell me...

I completely agree with the first interpretation. I have definitely been in a relationship where the love was lost. Watching some of the live performances of this song takes my breath...I can feel the agony and desperation in Joy's voice when she says "Oh,won't you read my mind, don't you let me lie here and die here". It takes my breath....

This song is haunting. The melody of this song is simply beautiful.
The song is essential about realizing the relationship isn't working, that the love that was once there is simply gone. The problem is she doesn't know how to end it and feels guilty about it. My favorite line is the very first one "Haven't you seen me sleepwalking, because I've been holding your hand." She is there in body but not in mind and wonders if he notices that there is now a disconnect between the two.
