The Killers: On Top Meaning
On Top Lyrics
-
This song is about partying and being high on ecstasy. Anyone who's done it would know this.
"like some other dj, in some other town" -this refers to how at raves dj's are always the ones who carry e.
"but now I've found the velvet sun
that shines on me and you" -this refers to the way it makes you feel. It gives you a warm velvety, fuzzy feeling.
"in the back..." -this refers to how people go in the back and have sex.
"the day is breaking, we're still here
your body's shaking, and it's clear" -as most people know e keeps you up all night. Your body's shaking refers to a side effect of e when you've been up all night and been having lots of sex. It happens to everyone.
"so get your eyes off of my bride tonight" -sometimes people get paranoid and thing everyone is giving them a look, this could be a reference to that.
"it's like a cigarette in the mouth
or a handshake in the doorway" -this refers to how relaxed and easy it makes you feel.
"I look at you and smile because I'm fine" -i know from personal experience, I would just look at my boyfriend and we would just giggle a little or smile cause you feel perfectly fine and great. -
Ok so maybe I'm just really peverted but this song to me is about a relationship but mostly sex.. He is reminiscing about there relationship "the velvet sun it shines on me and you", "it's just a shimmy and a shake" this bit is talkin bout the want and he can't deny that he wants her and she him. "Your body's shaking and it's clear you really need it so let go" he wants to look after her and give her everything she needs, she wants him and he'll take her.. "bump to the grind" (having sex) "cigerette in the mouth or a hand shake in the doorway I look at you and smile because I'm fine" the first part I think is talkin bout sexual acts..And the second part is saying that its all ok I no I'm ok cause I've got you.

I know this may sound twisted, but to me it sounds like the character is talking about dating this girl who likes to party too much. It's about a couple who live in the fast lane but the guy loves the girl no matter what. I also think it talks about this girl who suffers from addiction ( I don't know why, but I get that impression)
(the day is breaking, we're still here
your body shaking and it's clear
you really need it) -
Chavhater is right, it's not about Jenny or Natalie or any or anyone but about the group and how they feel or how its like to be on the road performing. Everything.
It may seem as though it's about a girl but the killers like to make you think about your own interpretations, which I think is a good idea because then it means more to a wider audience. ^^ -
