Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man Lyrics

It was our third time in new york
it was your fourth time in new york
we were fifth and sixth on the bill
we talk a little about our bands
talk a little of our future plans
it's not like we were best friends

That number scheme comes back to...

There’s always that person who says, “we should get together,” but neither of you reaches out to each other. Sometimes, when things are quiet and something jogs your memory about the meeting, you wonder where that person is. But, your day moves on, and you say, “I need to call that guy.” Someday.

This song is about when you meet someone for the first time, and it feels like you've been friends your whole life.

Specifically, it's about the time the band played a show with the Chicago band Material Issue and hung out afterwards with the singer, Jim Ellison, forming what they hoped would be a long friendship. Ellison committed suicide not long after, and it was the only time the band met him.

The first two verses tells of the meeting, and the third verse tells of the narrator going to see Ellison afterwards, and finding him gone. The prechorus (Those melodies come back to me, at times beyond our heartbeat) gives the bittersweet feeling of appreciating something you once experienced, while accepting that it will never happen again.

In the end, it's about the moment, and doing your best to be in the moment because you may never have it again. And it is an incredible tribute to Jim Ellison.
