The Tragically Hip: Poets Meaning
Poets Lyrics
When the birds can be heard above the reckonin' carts doing some final accounting
Lava flowin' in Super Farmer's direction
He's been gettin' reprieve from the heat in the frozen-food section
Don't tell...
-
I've always thought the Hip were referring to Politicians, Salesmen, (don't get sexist its just a saying, don't get your flaps in a knot) Insurance people, and of course......the tax guy......
Never a clear picture, with a touch of dillusion, decept, mixed into an open ended salad of unansweres and confusion....!!!!.... -
The song is an interplay of repeated metaphors connected to the overall inability to understand what poets mean in their different forms of art.
The song begins with a scene of Spring fever, in which the the heart begins to flow, like fresh love. The image is further described in the following line which depicts a mating ritual between birds. First the female completes the accounting of evaluating the male and then they engage in a loud display which covers the sound of the carts working in the field.
All descriptions are vague, like the artists themselves. Their crops suffer under the constant heat of the spotlight. They appear barren and unproductive.
