Tracy Chapman: Fast Car Meaning
Song Released: 1988
Fast Car Lyrics
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal

I think this song is about the deeper reality of poverty existing physically as well as mentality with the impoverished. The struggle out of poverty is a long road full of unforseen struggles that a person often ends up struggling with alone, as they seem to always be surrounded by poverty when not physically, mentally.

It's about hope and dreams. Hope for a better life and dreams that go beyond the dull everyday life. Without hope there is no life even though ''we ain't going nowhere'' and everything will remain the same. No escape.

I think the meaning of this song speaks to the cycle of addiction and how we often find ourselves in the same situations as our parents when we do not address the dysfunction of our past.

My interpretation of this is a young couple living in a big city such as LA who want to escape the concrete jungle where they feel trapped and oppressed, spread their wings, get better jobs and see what its like to be living. Classic song from the 80's

like a new relationship that to you is like a light at the end of the tunnel you were living in. you start imagining what you can finally be and do and achieve, so you say "to hell past life" and you pick up and go, filled with hope and you feel invincable.
you start off from sratch, then realize in the end, you're still in that tunnel, it's just a different scenery... at least this first person had a chance to know what it feels like to have a dream.
