Underneath Lyrics

Strip away the flesh and bone
Look beyond the lies you've known
Everybody wants to talk about a freak
No one want to dig that deep
Let me take you underneath
Baby better watch you step
Never mind what's on the left
You're gonna see things...

To me the song speeks of what some people go thru when they live in a life full of prejudice and are seen as nothing more than their skin color, race, sexuality, or pysical and/or mental handicap. It hurts when someone calls you stupid or a freak when they haven't walked in your shoes or lived your life.

i think hes talking about when you take away all the fame and fortune he has... hes the same old guy that was probably tormented for being gay when he was younger. And it still hurts deep down inside, no matter how well he hides it. Underneath all his fame and money, it still hurts when people call him "a freak"
("welcome to my world of truth"; "everyone wants to talk about a freak"; "tears in my eyes, underneath"; "your gonna see things you might not wanna see, still not that easy for me, underneath"; "look at me, now do you see") it really is a beautiful song... i recommend you listen to it

Adam didn't have a hard time ever because of his sexuality,as far as one can judge from his admitting that his mother was fine with him being gay,and that he never has felt closeted about his sexual orientation. Here, what he's tryna say is though he meant the aforesaid, yet he has felt other pains too, when he wasn't understood, and people misunderstood him as as someone unusual,a bad person, but he wants us to look inside him, that he is pained, heartbroken, probably doing self-harm at sometime in the past, has cried at times, and his stars and sky reference signify hope, that he is a self absorbed person, and has inner happines is also there:)

Being judged because of pass mistakes or at least what they see as a mistake or wrong.
Someone looking at you and thinking they know how you are without bothering to get to know you. Because of difficulties with speech or shyness or not falling in the so called normal space in society people not listening what you have to say or not valuing your thoughts. If you look nice people think it's all you have to offer or if you do not you have nothing to offer. I KNOW myself I have fears of people from their appearance but if I get the chance to know them on a one on one experience I find my fears were wrong. You may not be proud of everything you have done but as far as that goes that's no ones place to judge but between God and you only and your place to make it right is between God and you only also.

I think that the song is about people still not accepting him for who he is and that he is still hurt by the past when people would call him a freak. Then when it says" underneath, under my skin underneath the depth of my sin, look at me now do you see." Is say thing that underneath he is just an ordinarily person and it gets under his skin that allot of people and family might have tormented him all his life because he is gay. Then i think the most beautiful part of the song is " A red river of screams underneath, tears in my eyes underneath, back and blue skys." because its referring to self harm maybe and or people beating him up for his sin and what gender he like. It truly a beautiful song!!

I think the song reflects someone who is showing dark characteristics of themselves, hoping for acceptance, wanting understanding that you are not proud of specific sides of yourself, you do not want others to see. You do not want to hide behind a mask, but show your true self and will not apologize for what that truth is, for example Adam states: “You’re gonna see things you might not want to see, it’s still not that easy for me underneath. And, “I don’t want to hide any part of me away from you, I’m standing here with no apologies.” I feel that this song opens up a path for people to see what is hidden deep in one’s soul, he sings, “Strip away the flesh and bone” showing it is important to see inside that one individual. Taking away what they see with their eyes and looking at how that person really is. People want to recognize what is on the outside and not try to see what is in the inside. As he sings “Everybody wants to talk about a freak” “No one wants to dig that deep.”
I believe he is not indicating anything with blood or anything of the sort when he extravagantly sang out “A red river of screams”, but the pain that has been bottled up inside one’s heart about being seen only how they are on the outside more rather than what is in the inside, thus making this individual so tired of being treated this way and is screaming angrily inside.“Look at me, Now do you see?” He is saying that look at me and asking is it what you thought it would be underneath. In the lyrics he says:“Look beyond the lies you’ve known” He is implying do not judge me upon others opinions, but on your own. “Underneath, tears in my eyes” He is implicating there is stress in your life where you think society might not accept the truth of your world, but you refuse to hide those parts of you, knowing that you have many secrets in you life that will sooner or later fall out. As I repeat, he sings, “I don’t wanna hide any part of me from you.”
“Stars in my black and blue sky” He there is bad, but there is also good, focus on the good more on the bad, but in way that you would not refuse to accept the bad.
In the lyrics Adam sings, “Such a beautiful release, You inside me” I do not think it as a sexual reference, but a way of saying, it will be beautiful to experience the feeling of someone who accepts you as you and knowing you as a whole.

I believe that this relates to a lot of young people around the world, who struggle with wanting acceptance from society. The song strongly explores what society is like in the current time, there is always an expectation on how you are suppose to behave, act and dress, I say this, as I myself, went through a time, in my life where I had expectations from the people surrounding me on how I should behave, act and dress and it impacted the way I was, for I felt could not express myself because I was so afraid to be judged the way I truly am, but I came to a conclusion that, honestly there is no way to give society satisfaction, so what is the point of hiding the real person inside you if there is no alternative way to be the person others want you to be. I feel sad that people are struggling with this similar situation because you should not feel obligated to be someone you do not truly want to be. You should feel free to be able to create yourself and not feel as if you are being held under a microscope. Or feeling as if you are stepping on eggshells, but walking on solid ground at your own speed.

What people see on the outside isn't what is always what someone is feeling on the inside.

I actually think it means what he is underneath. Underneath meaning, the real person inside. I think he is referring to being in any kind of relationship. Not sexual per say but letting anyone get inside the real person. Black and blue just refers to pain from trusting and being let down. Inside of him, means being inside his heart, not just his body. I don't recall him ever mentioning that he had been bullied. I think his history has been one of love and understanding. He uses the word freak time and time again in his songs. Lots of people think they are freaks because they think differently then others. The word has also meant someone who is sexy.

I think he's talking about how people judge so quickly. How you can see whats underneath but other people can't, they choose not to. And underneath is where you hide everything you feel: the hatred, pain, regret, urges.

I think the meaning of this is, he describe the sex of gays. 'A red river of screams'
    he schrems because it hurts.

' Tears in my eyes' means that the pain is that big, he have to cry.

'Stars in my Blue and Black sky' He coudn't see something else because of the pleasure.

'Under my skin' means the ass where the other put his dick in.

' You are inside me' I think it means that someone put his cock into him.

Haha i think it's like this.. But it takes time to understand the pervert side of the meaning.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

But I'm not quite clear about some lines like:
'Stars in my black and blue sky' and why he used 'Underneath'?

I think that red river of screams means maybe not the selfharm but all the pain deep inside of him, which kind of pumps in his blood now meaning that it's always with him cause it has left a deep scar.

"a red river of screams" obviously refers to blood and self harm which may have been a part of his past and the pain that comes with it
