Originally by the Steel drivers. This song is about a man who finds out his lover has been with another man. He hitchhikes to Birmingham to catch a train to Louisiana. He tracks her down and goes to the side of town she is on. Claiming he wouldn't have done any of this if he hadn't loved her. He loads up a 44 magnum (gun) and kills her, resulting in him writing this song in jail, as the listener is lead to believe. In other words, he loved her so much, that it broke his heart and angered him when she strayed, in death she could only ever be with him. "Atleast I know she's lying still" suggests that the man knows she will always be faithful to him now because in killing her, he owns her.
