AFI: Affliction Meaning
Affliction Lyrics
new heights in genocide.
Lover I am loveless.
All my friends and I
toast health and suicide.
Lover, I am lonely.
Come on!
Were you holding hands when
my palms bled?
Oh, I will be alright...
just use me, just...

#1 top rated interpretation:Why do you keep referring AFI's songs to jesus, what is wrong with you people?
-
I sorta do see the parallels between this and Jesus's death, but I think Christians to often find similarities where none exist. in response to the comment by "tempest" about Havok being Christian, that's a load of B.S. (but Straight edge is true.) Havok never says what he believes, (well, once he jokingly claimed to be athiest, but that really doesn't count.) anyway I really think the meaning of the song is more literal, It is about someone who hates themself and feels "loveless," and so he starts by cutting himself, just to get attention and sympathy, but when he cuts himself everyone is creeped out and stays away from him. "Were you holding my hands when my palms bled?" In his agony, he doesn't want to live anymore, and commits suicide.

I'm pretty sure this song is about the sickness of humanity
"every night devise, new heights of genocide"
clearly this isn't talking of literally killing people,
but just wanting them to go away
and if you look into what would fit the description of 'sick' humanity
you'd look at junkies, porn stars, and just terrible people who live in this world
and for all of them to 'die' would be new heights if genocide indeed
"all my friends and I, toast health and suicide"
this just reinforces the first lines interp
saying they toast/appreciate people who take care of themselves
and don't become diseased filled people
second part has two meanings
one, he praises those people who OD and in a sense commit suicide
and ridding the world of themselves
or he understands why a person would commit suicide in our twisted world
"lover I am loveless/lonely"
pretty beautiful contradiction
brings back the porn theory
or just lust filled sex w/o love
"lover" is a term we associate with just sex, no love required
so lover I am loveless makes perfect sense
"were you holding hands when my palms bled?"
like saying, you were there before, but when everything started falling apart, you left
you could say that could be used to describe most cases of teen pregnancy
the guys there when everything's cool
then when it gets too rough he splits
"well I will be alright just use me, the futures bright w/o me, spend some time walking the line"
This is the 'victim' agreeing to any consequence that may come from their choice prior to it happening
"world is unified, ennui, and I divide"
this is where a sense of ambiguity enters the lyrics
it could mean that the world has already agreed on being the way it is
and the majority of the world is ok with being total filth
and Davey wants no part of that -
You are all wrong. sorry. The whole cd is about two people finding love during winter, and it's the only place they can be together. the only relegion in her is love, beauty, an inperfectness. that is the secret meaning to all of AFI's music Elegance and beauty.

He loves someone and the other person doesn't love him back, so he's going through his own pain,
AND WTF IS WITH EVERYONE SAYING AFI'S SONGS ARE ABOUT JESUS!
are you all christian or something sh*t sake guys -
In this song there are two lines that I would like to interpret here.
(Were you holding hands when my palms bled?)-In this I think he is reffering to a girl that he loves being with another guy. To him its extremely painful. I believe he's saying that when his palm started bleeding...was that when she was holding hnds with the other guy?
(Were you holding hands when my wrists bled?)-In this I believe he's talking about self mutilation. Because the girl doesn't love and doest want to be with him, he started cutting open his wrists to ease the pain inside. While he was doing he this he was proably thinking, 'Are you holding his hand right now?' -
Leave each other alone! The first anonymous have used the F-word less, and the anonymous who posted before tempest was a tad contemptuous. I don't believe that his songs are about Jesus either, I think that this one is about being a monster falling in love for the first time.
-
Okay, child of god. You are sick. First of all, if you don't like the music, why are you on here? Keep you're pathetic comments to yourself, and why can't anybody spell Davey's last name right? It's Havok, not Havock!
-
OK, something to make clear, I WAS RAISED CATHOLIC and I don't fucking sing about jesus. Neither does Havock, not even near, his lyrics are pretty fucking close to pagan ones, and he shows pagan honor in "Malleus Maleficarum" .
I mean, Davey has a fucking twisted inside out mind, everything BUT jesus.
And yeah, this lyric is about a guy whose lover cannot love him, and he feels the pain for it, but still loves him. He knows his "lover" does not truly love him but rather use him, and he doesn't care. "Oh I will be alright just use me." -
I was trying to figure out what this song meant,i still don't know, but I think that in miss murder he is talking about god.
"What's the hook, the twist within this verbose mystery?
I would gladly bet my life upon it
that the ghost you love, your ray of light will fizzle out
Without hope, hope. We're the empty set just floating through wrapped, in skin,
Ever searching for what we were promised
Reaching for that golden ring we'd never let go...
who would ever let us put our filthy hands upon it?"
call me crazy but that's what I think. -
Davey Havok was raised a Catholic so it wouldn't be that big of a surprise to see a religious theme in some of AFI's music. Look at Love like Winter, "I met my love before I was born... He wanted blood... He drank my war..." Or Silver and Cold "Your sins into me... I fall asleep for you..." Its possible. Then again, maybe we're supposed to wonder. Somebody should ask them. I'm happy not knowing. If you're a Christian its cool, if you're not its still cool.

I always thought this was about a person who is in a relationship in which the other person is in love with them.
But this person is incapable to love "lover I am loveless". And this person feels pain "were we holding hands when my palms/wrists bled" their lover thought everything was okay and they were all close but this persons bleeding. Then this person says "oh I will be alright just use me" go ahead and pretend we're in love use me to get that warm fuzzy feeling I'll be alright even though you're playin with me.
This person cares more about their lover then they have for anyone but knows that there is no love to give. They will always be cold and lonely "lover I am lonely" so they warn that the future is brtght without them and if their lover stays the future will be full of pain and misery.
And reaches the conclusion that since love is pain you should "stay sweetly numb, remain lifeless love" -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
-
I think Davey does talk about religion and Jesus a lot I think it has been a big part of his life trying to figure out if it is all real or just a hoax
-
All I can figure is that it's about self-destruction.
