This song is so powerful for me. I don't think it is about literally writing a song, but about her living a life where she doesn't have to fit in to what everyone is telling her to be like. Also, it talks about how you can't let life go by, time goes way too quick for that. I'm sorry to go a bit long, but...
The first part, with the lyrics
"Tune in to find my peace and solitude
These empty rooms spin, and I embrace the flaws of being human
The black and white, and sometimes the grays that stay for days
The in-between times, the meantimes that make this song of life sing"
seems to talk about how life can have some difficulties, but you can power through them. Especially the lines about embracing your flaws and the "song of life". It isn't going to be what people want, because she likes her flaws.
"Play, rest, repeat, read exactly what is written on the sheet
"Don't deviate, " they say
But I will play what's best for me
I'll press the keys and pull the strings, create a symphony that's mine"
To me is about how people will tell her that she just has to be like everyone else. You can't deviate from who they are. And she tells them no. She will do what is best for her, regardless of if she is not following their script.
"And I'll spend my life penning my song, my song
And the verses I write will speak for me
Good girls don't make history
So I may never be what you assume (it's my song)
Don't want your hooks or auto-tune (it's my song)
If I'm off-key then that's alright with me (it's my song)
Oh, and maybe you will learn this when I'm gone (it's my song)
My song will carry on"
Seems to be about the same things, how she "may never be what you assume" and how she doesn't want the world's auto-tune. The best line in this verse is "good girls don't make history" because the girls that follow the world's script won't make history. They have to defy the expectations. And it is true, maybe they won't get it until they realize that she didn't listen to them.
"Let go, I let my voice be heard, then listen for the echo
My own reverb is playing 'cause I'm a movement
There's dissonance, sometimes I make mistakes
Oh, I'm human after all, I'm not your expectations"
Is also really powerful, as she is saying that she will make mistakes, and since she's human, she won't live up to the world's expectations.
Than, my personal favorite part:
"In my time here, I wanna be revered and remembered
Oh, let them say I came, I conquered
So I won't fear and I can't blend in
You can't replace me and you cannot erase me
'Cause my song will live on beyond time"
I think she sums up her entire song here. She isn't going to be scared of what the world thinks. She conquered the limited time she has. And that last line about living on beyond time is my favorite line. She is saying that she won't listen to the world, and, because of this, people will remember.
I'm really sorry to write a book there, but in short, I just think this song is about not living up to the world. Instead, intentionally failing the world. Because, in the end, it is her life. Not the world's to own.
