Alter Bridge: Watch Over You Meaning
Watch Over You Lyrics
Fall has come
Blue skies turning grey
Like my love
I tried to carry you
And make you whole
But it was never enough
I must go
[Chorus:]
Who is gonna save you
When I'm gone?
And who'll watch over you
When I'm gone?
You...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think that the song is about a heartbroken guy who is in love but doesn't think the girl feels anything for him back so he lets it go instead of confronting anything. But he still loves her secretly and unknowing, until the end, that she actually loves him back too. But then it's too late because he's already gone.

To me this song is about my 27 year old daughter who is a heroin addict. She is in rehab for the third time, and grandma and I are helping raise her three-year-old daughter. I'm dealing with cancer for the fourth time, and I really don't know "who is gonna save her when I'm gone". I pray to God that she beats the addition this time, before it kills her.

I believe the song is about a man and a woman. The man loves the woman, but has felt a need to always take care of her and be her "savior." The man knows she is not the one. He loves her because of the past and the emotional investment he put into being there for her. Although, his love will soon fade (like blue skies turning grey). The love is there uneven and the woman loves the man more than what the man feels. He questions who will keep her safe and will the right man be there for her or will she fall into the path that was once fixed. That path could be falling for untrustworthy and hurtful men. The man finally decides to leave and is long gone.

For me the meaning of this song is my first born son I’ve had to watch over him his whole entire life he had a real Dad that never had nothing to do with him and a stepdad that never adopted him before he died when he was a teenage and that family treats him like he is not part of their family after 30 some years. He has had problems coping he’s angry all the time he distances himself from family he always has money issues him and his wife I’ve helped him till I can help no more he is depressed and will not admit it. It reflects on all of us I just don’t know what to do anymore. I pray for him all the time day and night as soon as I heard this song my son come to mind.

It’s about a wife who is an alcoholic and has been for many years. The husband has watched the love of his life destroy herself and everyone close to her. The husband has tried to help her but nothing he says or does can get through to her. The husband is helpless and becomes very frustrated and sick himself from living in the dysfunctional marriage. It becomes too much so he is forced to choose between continuing to live in the dysfunctional marriage or his own peace of mind and sanity.

To me and this is coming from my current situation. I feel it’s a husband who has watched over and has always protected his wife, but now he has a disease and will be dying soon and he is asking will watch over and protect her when he has passed away

This is about falling in love with a narcissist that's used his kind nature and fed off of him like a vampire. They bleed you dry and blame you for everything and nothing is good enough, no matter how much you try.
Having just escaped such a horrifying narcissistic relationship, this song jumped up at me and it's word for word. -
Depression
The cycles of mental illness and how they fall further and further away and the co-dependency one feels wanting to help and SAVE them only to become the source of blame...maybe even a touch of narcissism when he mentions “how can you love someone not yourself...”
Mental illness destroys a relationship and a one way love will result in a crash into the proverbial wall... -
I think its about a parent-child relationship, the setting of fall is a symbol of the parents awareness of their own morality and they are worried about what will happen to their child when theyre gone.

i think its about God watching over us and our failure to trust in him and his sadness in letting us go to do what we want without him in our lives.. jmo

It's about loving someone with an addiction. It's about always feeling the need to protect and nurture the addict but in return not get nothing because they are incapable. It's about walking away in hopes of finding better and in finding someone who can love in return but always caring and thinking about the addict you just left!

I think this song is about a guy who is inlove with someone who is helpless. He tries to help her and gives her want she wants but it's never enough. She makes excuses for herself in order to get his attention but he is never good enough for her. In the end he leaves her to better himself for once. He talks about who will do everything for her when he leaves and who will put her first, because nobody does.

I believe it is about loving someone who is having a very hard time trying to overcome an addiction.
