   My interpretation of this song is creating a version of someone who you like (platonically or romantically) and realizing that the person who you thought u knew was all in your head. Here are some lyric examples:
   
   "Painted a picture
   I thought I knew you well," basically stating she created an image of what she thought they were.
   
   "I saw your potential
   Without seein' credentials (-entials)" This is probably my favorite line, seeing what they could be, instead of what they are. And she says after, "maybe that's the issue," this whole is realizing she created a different person and when she actually took down the curtains she knew she made up an image of someone, nitpicking all the good things abt them and understanding it was never there in the first place and all 'In Her Mind'

   “in my head” is about a boy who Ariana loved deeply, but she couldn’t seem to steer him in the right direction. He was going the wrong direction in life, but she tried to overlook things and work it out. In the song, she says she “painted a picture” of him to try to make him “fit,” but she learned that this version of the guy would never happen.

   I think this song is about how she has been imagining the perfect boy in her head who ends up leaving her and she realized it was all in her head and she is saying how she invented him in her mind she says “everything you are made you everything you aren’t” and she finally made it to the conclusion that she made him in her head
