Lead Sails (And a Paper Anchor) Lyrics

Marching along
Like a good soldier does
I’m setting sail
With anchors
Holding me down
Pack up my bags
Stow them away
I’m bidding farwell
To all that is safe

Will I come up for air?
Come up for air

[Chorus]
After a while the...

I think this song can be about alcoholism.

"I needed a drink, I never thought this would consume me whole, will I come up for air?" "After a while the current is calling me lulling me waving goodbye" "oh God can you save me now?"

It's about how alcoholism takes over and alcohol is both a sense of comfort and the cause of many serious issues. Will I survive this? It's someone both wishing for survival and safety as well as giving up on life.

I believe this song is about war and a soldier's perspective of it.

    Lyrics with Interpretations:

Marching Along, Like A Good Soldier Does.
I’m Setting Sail, With Anchors Holding Me Down.
Pack Up My Bags, Stow Them Away.
Bidding Farewell To All That Is Safe.

(The soldier goes to war with a heavy disadvantage, note the anchors. He takes a few belongings with him and says good bye to his safe country)

    Chorus
Will I Come Up For Air, Come Up For Air.
After awhile The Current is Calling Me,
    lulling Me Waving Goodbye.
I’m Out Here Alone, Oh God Can You Save Me Now?
Sinking My Heart Turns To Stone.

(He wonders, will he quit? Will he go home? Everyone else, the current, is slowly dying or losing. A part of him wants to be with them. He is on the battle field feeling all alone and prays to god. Then he dies or passes out.)

Withering Away, A Shrinking Violet Dies.
So Full Of Life, These Lights Have Dried Me Out.
Into The Sea, I Needed A Drink.
I Never Thought This Would Consume Me Whole.

(Violets are flowers that are very common in some places. This has pretty much the same meaning as 'the current is calling me lulling me waving goodbye' He takes a rest and never wakes.)

    Chorus

    Save Me, Take Me Home,
    Over And Over Again.
    Save Me, Take Me Home.
Wishing That This All Would End.
    Save Me, Take Me Home,
    Over And Over Again.
    Save Me, Take Me Home,
Wishing That This All Would End.

(Half dead or still hanging on, he wishes for home.)

    Chorus

    Save Me Take Me Home,
When I Come Up For Air,
    Save Me Take Me Home,
When I Come Up For Air,
    Save Me Take Me Home,
    Over And Over Again.
    Save Me Take Me Home.

Wishing That All This Would End.

    [That's pretty much it, thanks!]
