AWOLNATION: Kill Your Heroes Meaning
Song Released: 2012
Kill Your Heroes Lyrics
dying on a train.
No more destination
no more pain.
Well he said
"one thing, before I graduate...
never let your fear decide your fate."
I say ya kill your heroes and
fly, fly, baby don't cry.
No need to...

#1 top rated interpretation:It's more about taking control of your life, and to not be afraid of matching up to a hero. Everybody dies in the end, but that doesn't mean they won't be remebered.
Kill you heroes, and use them to inspire and drive you. Don't be afraid of dying in the end, because that's going to happen to everyone.
Also, don't ever think your dreams, life, and heroes aren't worth loving. People will love you for what you do, who you are, not who you respect or are inspired by. Kill your heroes and become your own inspiration. Its the best tribute you can give to them. -
Your heroes and idols will let you down. Your image of them will one day shatter. Having a hero is having an idealized version of that person you look up to. As you grow older, the image of your heroes in your head can only crumble because no human can match up to the ideal version of themselves that someone else holds.
Trying to hold yourself to standards of your heroes that they themselves can't even actually be is a futile effort that generally leads to disappointment and discontent in yourself. If you knock your heroes off their pedestal and see them as real people under the same general limits as you, it's easier to view yourself as capable of doing the same things they can do, because they're people just like you.
There's no point in holding onto these images and the fear of failure. Nothing matters, we will all die, the world will end, you're free to do as you please and "fly" (spread your wings/live your life). It holds themes of nihilism but is based in the existentialist theory that nothing matters so you have absolute freedom over your life.
I think it's a particularly potent song in the current social climate where many heroes are paid spokespersons or must censor themselves for their labels/brands. With AWOLNATION, it feels like another nudge to its listeners to not just accept what's fed to them and follow status quo the way that most media is trying to instill. -
The meaning of the song is summed up in the lyrics "Never let your fear decide your fate." One of my favorite quotes is, "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but rather that we are powerful beyond all belief." To be scared of hard work is to let your "fear decide your fate." The idea of "killing your heroes" is that the idea of a hero, a person who has been successful in an area that we want to be successful in, cannot stop us from trying to be successful. Show that you can match up with anybody.

the music video is about these kids left alone at home when their mom is at work or something and she says "okay Barney (barney is the oldest sibling) dont let your brother or sister get in trouble" but theyre watching this show where awolnation plays the song and it apperantly makes the kids go crazy and do all this stuff like break lamps and pour milk on each other. when the mom gets back the room is a huge mess and it just shows the kids looking at the mom at she looks at the mess. meaning that they did what they want, but there was conciquences. it means that you can be your own hero in times. dont just do what other people do {i say you kill your heros}

Be independent.
Simple as that. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Pay attention to the lyrics of all the songs on Megalithic Symphony. They're a warning, not some feel-good music...but feel free to make it whatever you want; that's the beauty of art.
I've been to an AWOLNATION concert. This guy is a genius. I've seen him make a crowd cheer when they should have been insulted.
Before you completely disagree about my first paragraph, look up "Knights of Shame." -
I think that it means that sometimes when you idolize someone you go to far and try to be like them, copying everything they do. So you need to let go of your heroes and build your own personality, and maybe you can become someone greater than your hero ever was.

I know this is long. If you want the straightforward review (about a paragraph), scroll to the last paragraph.
(this is a repeated review, with a little more added. i am the same person.)

Before coming here I had no idea what this song meant. I read most of the reviews. Its much easier to appriciate the song now that i understand it.
What it means:
"I say you kill your heroes, and fly" This line previously didn't make any sense to me what so ever.
Its not literal, when they say to kill your heroes. They just want you to leave your relations, and ideas of them (or other figures, or inspirations) behind. When you let them go, you control your life. All of it. You aren't going to be influenced by anyone. It's not just saying to be your own person. Its says to avoid living in a shadow of someone else. Dont try to live your life like a hero. Just be yourself. If you are your own inspiration, and a positive inspiration, people love you for you. You might even become the hero for someone else. Inspire yourself, and live for yourself. Don't live in a shadow.
Don't be scared of death. Everyone dies. Live your life, and live your own life. Do good with the life you have. Life is about how YOU are remembered. What you did, what you stood for. You aren't remembered by what you liked, or things that inspired you. When people remember you, they remember the life you lived; not a life you appriciated or strived for.
Don't try to be someone else because you are afraid of being judged. You must accept yourself for who you are, before anyone else does.
You must let go of the big names, and popular figures. Become your own person. Control your own fate. DO NOT STIVE TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. people love you as you are. Make your life worth remembering. Be yourself, and dont fear disaproval. -

I think that it is saying you should kill your heroes so that you can become a hero. Do not fear anything because at the end we will all die and we should not let fear control our lives.
-
To me, this song is about living life while you have it. The old man dying on the train represents regret. He tells the first person narrator to "Never let your fear decide your fate," because we're all going to die in the end, and we'll all be forgotten. Therefore, all our actions are ultimately insignificant in the grand view of the Universe. "Killing your heroes" is disregarding all those you imitate and idolize, and living for yourself and yourself alone.
It's a truly beautiful song, really. -
Perhaps this song has a deeper, darker meaning.
Considering this is by "AWOL"nation, maybe this is about a possible future where our own government pushes its people to the brink of civil war by whittling away their rights (for example, many people will be outraged if the govt tries to take away their guns...last time that happened, a revolution occurred).
We hold soldiers in high regard for sacrificing their lives for us. If civil war occurs, a common belief is that a good percentage, but probably not the majority, of the U.S. military will remain loyal to the government and fight against their own people. As for the guerrilla insurgency, I say you kill your heroes. -
god damin i love this song i need it , it helped me realize that no matter how much i hide it no matter how much deny it im hurting inside and i cant let it consume me but i have to push on cuz its the biggest tribute that i can give him.

"killing your heroes" as in not letting anybody stand in you rway, or influence you over anything. yo uare your own person and yo udecide what you do, dont follow someone elses path. "fight to die", well, dont let anybody put you down. you have to go through t he hard times in your life, and you cant let yourself be stopped. you decide the outcome of your life, not anybody else. push yourself to what you believe you want to do, dont let anything stop you.
-
that you are your own hero so live your life how you want to your going to die like everyone else so dont envy anyone!!
