Ben Folds Five: Rockin the Suburbs Meaning
Rockin the Suburbs Lyrics
Being male, middle class and white
It’s a bitch, if you don’t believe
Listen up to my new cd
Sham on
I got shit running through my brain
So intense that I can’t explain
All alone in my white boy...
-
This is a song about white angst in middle class America and his music's reception among frustrated suburbanites. Timid to a fault, he or his listeners are bubbling over with impotent rage and find release wherever they can and Ben Folds, a man with an audience, has a very public outlet with which to vent. But his producers alter some of this.
One also does not have to be a minority to feel confused or alienated at a societal level. Living his life without harming a soul, Ben Folds resents being grouped as just another white male part of some system that enslaved Africans way in the past.
