Bush: Glycerine Meaning

Album cover for Glycerine album cover

Song Released: 1995

Glycerine Lyrics

Must be your skin that I'm sinkin in
Must be for real cause now I can feel
and I didn't mind
it's not my kind
not my time to wonder why
everything's gone white
and everything's grey
now your here now you away
I don't want this
remember...

I think its about the male relationship Gavin had years ago when he was younger and he ended the relationship and kept it a secret as he felt it would hurt his image and position in his (then) upcoming band...Bush. Not too long ago his supposed ex-boyfriend disclosed the details about his relationship with Gavin and how hurt he was that Gavin hid and ended their relationship.

Well, for dramione fans, this is pretty much their theme song. Gryffindor and slytherin equals Glycerin, but with an e. besides, "I treated you bad," is draco and "you brusied m face," describes what happen in their 'relationship' in their 3rd year. So you have to be a dramione fan to understand the complexity of their love.

I'm suprised nobody has figured out the emphasis on the title yet. I see it as a combination of two ideas. One is nitro-glycerine which as others stated is a highly unstable and powerful explosive. But that way of saying it is (gliss-ser-in.
He pronounces the title (gliss-er-een. If you take the "Gly" out of the title you are left with "cerine"or the proper spelling of that word "Serene". Serene defined means: calmly, placidly, peacefully, coolly, quietly, tranquilly.
So by spelling and saying the title they way he does (added with the opposing lyrics), I believe he is talking about a relationship to a girl or drugs in which there is times of serinity and times of explosive anger.

I seem to remember reading an interview with bush that detailed a change in the lyrics."Cup of blood you pour" You've got a beautiful taste. Instead of "could'nt love u more". Does anyone know about this? My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts.

in this song which is an awesome song by the way, he is trying to say that he is in an abusive relationship mentally physically and emotionally. Glycerine in this song could be used in all the ways: as a lubricant, preservative, explosive, etc. when he says I'm never alone
    I'm alone all the time
he means that even tho she is always there he still feels empty inside like there is no reason to still be holding on to the relationship but they are both so used to each other they don't know anything else. in the part where he says we live in a wheel
    where everyone steals
but when we rise it's like strawberry fields
he means that they are stealing each others happiness by stayin with each other but when they compromise everything is better. when he says glycerine he is meaning to help lubricate and make the relationship run smoother. and he was not making it easy for her to stay happy in the relationship. also when he says glycerine he wants to preserve the relationship because he loves her so much and she will always be in his heart. from personal experience, I would listen to this song and try to sort out my "life" and it all seemed to make sense on how you perceive the song. It could have endless possibilities especially if you compare it to your life

Glycerine is a colorless orderless substance that is the core ingredient of a myriad of everyday products.

If I were to call you my Glycerine.... then I would be saying that you were the basis of my existance. Or the foundation of my world.

Its the glue that held so much of his world together in a tornado of a time in his life. A time that for whatever reason is over. And there is a hint of regret lingering in the melody.

when i first heard this song the romantic in me presumed it was a love song basically. i thought he was singing about a very tumultuous relationship. i also thought the song was about sex, (no i'm not a perv,) but i can see how he could be describing sex with someone he loves passionatley and in an unhealthy relationship with

...Must be your skin that I'm sinkin in
...but when we rise it's like strawberry fields
...you got a beautiful taste (self explanatory)

also gavin rossdale performing this = sex
you tube "glycerine woodstock 99" (maybe i'm a perv...

So he leaves it up to interpretation? It's easy, replace glycerine with heroin(E)...

"Must be your skin, I'm sinking in..." come on, the needle sinks in the skin when it attacks the vein.

    Blah blah blah...drug experience

"Don't let the days go by," junkies don't move, usually...

One extreme or the other...pick something in between but you can't...

"I treated you bad" (I abused you) "You bruised my face" (deformed me as a result)

"Couldn't love you more, got a beautiful taste..." self explanatory. Addiction, and you ever get that taste at the back of your throat after you take aspirin or snort something up your nose? Heroin's the same...

"Couldn't change though I wanted to..." Leave that evil "lady" behind, but you can't...

Assuming heroin's a person, he or she abused the hell out of this dude and never stopped..."I needed you more, when we wanted you less..."

I am so strung out right now. Just the brain caving in.

Need I remind you of "Comedown?" Attack the vein and then put up a defense, but I bet it tries to swarm your flanks and attacks your center. Next thing you know you're being pushed back into Belgium as you pray for Patton to show up. When he does, you feel relieved; the war's over, but you end up in Korea or Vietnam anyway. Finally, you're melting fossils in a spoon with lava to get your next kick and end up in Afghanistan...damn
