Songs about Biblical Characters or Stories

Regardless of religious preferences, most of us will readily admit that the Bible is an important work of literate in Western culture, established in our culture even when it isn't in all of our belief systems. And even at that, the Bible is full of verse, prose, drama, and archetypal characters that have become woven into legend and lore. It may come as no small surprise that many scholars trace some of these stories right back outside the Bible again, to a time before Christianity. Study enough religion, and you'll find that many of them share the same themes, if not the identical stories and names.

You'd be surprised at just how many songs make reference to Biblical figures. This actually fits with some parts of the Bible, as the books of Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon at least are regarded as poetry. Thus, the Bible unites the oral tradition of the early days of bards, actually making songs themselves part of its fabric. Why not borrow a page or two for a song subject? It worked so well with Cecil B. DeMille for movies.
