Cavetown: Devil Town Meaning
Devil Town Lyrics
Yeah, right, no one's gonna catch us now
Dad has bought a new car now
We're fine, no one's gonna catch us now
You said something dumb again
She's mad, at least that's what they say
Mum and daddy aren't in...

I think this is about a boy who had a toxic family and got mistreated. Nobody understood him and bullied him so he thought and caused suicide while thinking about his loved ones and how he felt with them, when they have the funeral everyone is wearing black and white dressing gowns except for him because even though he is dead he is still a misfit in everyone's eyes.
-
I think this song represents a person with Schizophrenia thinking they have friends who aren’t actually human and she mad is talking about them colder means closer…
-
I think it's abt the Holocaust, think abt the lyrics 'i forgot my name again', maybe referring to the jews in the concentration camp not using names. And think abt 'were all in our dressing gowns, mine white and stripy' maybe referencing to the gowns they used to wear while locked up.
-
I think its about a divorce and the kids either dying or running away (hence :they cant find us now ) its a sad deep song and hits a little close to home. Sad af 10/10. Love it
-
i haven't seen anyone say this so I'm going to. Personally I feel like the dressing gowns mean one is in prison ( white and stripy) and the other is buried ( green and brown).
-
I love devil town. I think this song is about growing up in a toxic family invierment and being mentaly ill and trying to find an escape from life and all its problems and just 'not' caring.
-
just my opinion :)
i think this song is about two siblings (older and younger, the oldest being the one who’s singing the song) who’s parents are getting divorced and the oldest is basically protecting the younger sibling from their abusive parents and they like to hide and pretend they’re somewhere else (devil town) given the lyrics “we’re fine no one’s gonna catch us now” “hold my hand tight, we’ll make it another night” “we’re all dead in devil town, that’s fine cause nothing’s gonna scare us now”.
i also like the holocaust theory and i think it makes more sense than my interpretation -
I think this song is about divorce and mental illness. There are many lines referring to divorce like “mom and daddy aren’t in love” as well as “Dad has bought a new car now”. Other lines have double meanings, such as “she’s mad, at least that’s what they say” where mad can mean either angry (presumably about the pronoun “she” as the singer-songwriter is a trans man) or insane. The themes of mental illness are shown later in the song with the line “I’ll lose my mind at least another thousand times”. Also, the lines “we’re all in our dressing gowns/mine’s white and stripy, yours is green and brown” could refer to clothing worn in a mental hospital, possibly one which the protagonist refers to as Devil Town. The other character mentioned could be a friend that the narrator has met while in the hospital. Furthermore, “I forgot my name again” could either reference the narrator forgetting their deadname because they’re trans, their last name because of their parents divorce, or any name at all because of their mental illness and isolation in a psych ward. Other theories about Devil Town referring to an abusive household, an imaginary place for the narrator to go, or hell itself are equally likely, I just wanted to share my take :)

TW suicide
I think that it has two meanings. Someone coming out as non binary or transgender because of the line ‘you said something dumb again, she’s mad at least that’s what they say’ maybe suggest that people always misgender the person and it’s a dumb thing someone said and the she’s mad is someone saying that the person is mad because they got misgendered and is being teased about it. Also at the same time it’s also about the parents divorcing and two of the kids commit suicide or something like that and one kid commits because of being bullied for coming out and their parents divorcing and the other one missed their sibling and committed or it could be about two kids getting sent somewhere after their parents divorced therefore explaining the line ‘we’re all in our dressing gowns mines whit and truly and yours is green and brown suggesting that they both got sent somewhere? This is my personal opinion -
TW: divorce, poverty, violence, spiders
My interpretation isn't that much different than much others in the aspect- the overall idea is divorce. Anyways, remember that line about the white striped outfit and the green and brown one? Well, I think the song is about a kid who has a parent in the military (green and brown meaning a military uniform). I think the kid was placed with his/her father, which is why the song references what the dad did more than the mom. I think they were poor/loved in poverty because of the whole spider thing. The spiders were in the shoes, so you can assume the house has many bugs. I can assume it's because the family is more on the poor side and they can't afford to fix the issue. I think the other person they mention in the parts where it references somebody who is going though/went through the same thing is their sibling.
I also think the kid's parents were abusive. I have a very close friend who is being abused because CPS temporarily placed her with her father. She is still there and her mom is fighting for her back. Summer was difficult for her since she couldn't go to my house (30 minute walk), her mom's, or school. I think the kid in the story went through something similar, and that's why is says "devil town was colder in the summertime". It said it because the rest of the year was sunny and happy for the most part, but summer was rainy and depressing. I personally think when it says "devil town", it means this person's hometown. It could also mean their neighborhood or even their home. Any of those make sense in my opinion. -
TW: Suicide, Divorce
This is just my opinion :)
This is about a child who's parents are going through a divorce, saying their 'fine' with having two birthday celebrations. The child develops depression and ends up 'seeing thing that aren't real'. They meet a deceased child who tells them all about the afterlife and comforts them. On the day the child dies they are wearing a white and stripy dress while their deceased friend is wearing a green and brown dress. As they put on their shoes the child finds spiders in them. Her deceased friend tells her that their more scared of her. As the two are falling the child gets scared but then says that they feel better because their deceased friend did this too. I assume they reach devil town and live a happy life their and keep their friendship strong.
:DD -
The part where it says "Devil town is colder in the summertime", for me, when things were hard at home summertime was the worst because there was no escape to school or support from friends. So it could be referring to something like that.

Ok I just wanted to say theirs a line we’re their talking about clothes and he says “mine is white and stripy yours is green and brown” are they talk about the jail grown and military uniform?
-
I believe that this is mostly, as most of this has shown, 2 sibling that have gone through a divorce, and abusive parents. The line “you said something dumb again” is evidence of such as well as the kids going through suicidal thoughts.

Has anyone ever noticed that when you listen to something, you stay to it because you relate to it? Personally, my dad has always shown more love to me. I've recently noticed this through looking at the things my parents do and say to and around me. So my interpretation is kind of off that. That the Dad has a new car so they can move away and the parents are splitting(For me sadly it was the opposite). They forgot their name because they are building a new world and if the characters are anything like me, you don't want your real name in your fake, escape home(I even made plans to try and be happier and to look like the imaginary future self I had created). They probably have a sibling that they were very close to but they are slowly drifting apart as time goes by(Again, something I sadly am going through with my sister). They are hoping to hold on to the memories of their happiness so that they can be that again(..you already can piece this together).
Though this is only my take on it and everyone's take on it is different. Lots of them are going to be from their experiences or their dreams and hopes, but they all are different because humans are different. Anyway, TED Talk over.
