What I take from this song is a look from his brother Joey's eyes after he was dismissed/ left the band."this city saving grace" I think refers to Pete being the pride of grays lake Illinois where they are from. A lot smaller town than Chicago. "I won't pretend to lie once more protect my mind" refers to the reason why Joey isn't in the band anymore. He didn't like what it took to be successful in the business like touring rehearsals so on so on. I guessing Pete is say Joey is retreating to safer water. A normal life not as a rock band member. At this point of time the band was about to make their run 06ish that is still going strong today
