Coldplay: Warning Sign Meaning
Warning Sign Lyrics
I missed the good part then I realised
I started looking and the bubble burst
I started looking for excuses
Come on in, I’ve gotta tell you what a state I’m in
I’ve gotta tell you in my loudest tones
That I started looking...

When a really close friend whom I love dearly left, all I could think of in my sea of tears was "when the truth is, I miss you"

In a world where no one is perfect and we all have flaws we can choose to look at our partners in a positive or negative way. If you do have a fear of getting hurt and have had bad relationships in the past with family or lovers when things get serious you'll tend to focus on the negative (warning signs} which will eventually pull you apart because you can only see a negative outcome. Only when the person has gone do you start to see that they were the only thing/person/island in a life that can sometimes feel like an empty sea lacking substance. No matter how stormy things get out there, your island will always be a source of security!

I think, in this song, he's talking about how he was in a relationship, but basically got paranoid and started looking for a 'warning sign' of what was to come -- were things going to end? And we all know that when a couple starts doubting their relationship, things don't go over to well. And then, realizing how bad he misinterpreted the situation, he welcomes her back with open arms.

I've heard a lot of interpretations for this song, many of which seems to fit so I guess you can take it however you wish. I seem to think it's about people who let an opportunity to slip because they are afraid to fall in love and get hurt. They dream about being with that one person but are always looking for excuses to stay away, when that person is gone they regret ever letting him or her passed by without even an attempt. The verse "You were an island and I passed you by, you were an island to discover" always gets me.

This song is about letting your fear of bein hurt (looking for a warning sign) prevent you from having a proper relationship with someone, and then how afterwards you see what a fool you were to let the person go and how much you miss them.
