Girls Just Want to Have Fun Lyrics

I come home in the morning light
My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
The phone rings in the middle of the night

The song has been covered so many times by female and male artist, famous and unknown. I think the song is a representation of women in the 1980's. They just don't want to have fun, but they want to be treated equal; guys/males were always allowed to "have fun," with no repercussions. It is definitely a feministic view on women in society during the 80's! There is a lot more to it...

Cindy Lauper’s masterpiece has many evidences of flowing feminism. In the verse,
“My mother says "When you gonna live your life right?" Oh momma dear, we're not the fortunate ones. And girls, they wanna have fun. Oh girls just wanna have fun…”
This suggests that while she says “we’re not the fortunate ones” that could be referring to boys in this instance being able to have fun. Many years ago, girls were not treated the same as boys and in some places it hasn’t changed at all, this song specifically represents the 1980’s and what society was like back then. As a side note, this is not the original version of this song. Cindy Lauper changed some of the lyrics to make it more relatable for her and other girls in the world. One lyric in particular, that Cindy Lauper included to make it more “her own” was; “Some boys take a beautiful girl. And hide her away from the rest o' the world. I wanna be the one to walk in the sun. Oh girls, they wanna have fun”

I think to the song I like the hook to be the best part but when we have the part to sing but me and Ben are singing higher and I thought I wasn’t that bad. But me and him wrote it together but we always have some time to record some songs we wrote this song about being friends and we can do be like summer nights then we can do stuff like that.

The first verse is about her returning home from partying all night and being scolded by her mother. She then tells her mother that females are not the "fortunate ones" so the least she can do is try to enjoy her life.

The second verse is about her father criticising her for taking a telephone call late at night. Her father fears his daughter is growing up too fast. She reassures him that he's still number 1. Which can either be seen as her saying her dad is the most important man to her OR it can be interpreted as her saying that men are "still number one" and that women are not treated equally.

The third verse is about how some men who are chauvinistic and jealous will not allow their girlfriend/wife to go out and socialise and enjoy life. This is a apt criticism of the macho male stereotype. She then says that she doesn't want to be supressed and hidden away - she wants to be the one who walks in the sun - I.e. She walks to enjoy her life and her personal freedom.

It's really quite a deep and intelligent song. The fact that it carries such a social/cultural message but that noone notices because of how catchy and up-beat It is just makes it more impressive.
