i actually know because my mom is the one who dave matthew’s liked believe it or not (she was his makeup artist) but she was married to my dad so he wrote this song dedicated to her

i think it means that the girl who 'calls him bluff' doesn't really love him, but he is trying to make her' be his angel'. so to sum it up, he wants the girl to give him a chance.

in this song dave is relating a card game to the game of love "I call you up" meaning both a term in poker and calling his girl on the phone. "You pick up" meaning both picking up cards and picking up the phone. "You call my bluff" means both bluffing in poker and that he hoped she wouldent pick up the phone. from here on it relates more loosley in my opinion he wasent trying to be exact just give you the general Gist. -Joeg-
