David Bowie: Boys Keep Swinging Meaning
Song Released: 1979
Boys Keep Swinging Lyrics
The clouds part for ya
Nothing stands in your way
When you're a boy
Clothes always fit ya
Life is a pop of the cherry
When you're a boy
When you're a boy
You can wear a uniform
When you're a boy
Other boys check you...

Women had been breaking & redefining their gender restrictions for decades yet men accepted the stereotypes put upon them as though they had everything. "Be a real man" was still a common phrase". This is about breaking free from gender expectation - a theme of much of his work. This is why he dragged up in the video, contrasting the old traditional suit & tie he sang in - highlighting the expression of static male constrictions. Old female movie stars made cross dressing for females a fashion in the early 20th century & women continued to challenge the passive roles put on them. Men's roles barely changed in all this time. Bowie dared to wear a dress in 1970, declared his bisexuality in 1972 & became as glamorous as any woman. Time to catch up guys.
