Ellie Goulding: The Writer Meaning
The Writer Lyrics
I wait for a word
Lying next to your frame
Girl unobserved
You change your position
You're changing me
Casting these shadows
Where they shouldn't be
We're interrupted
By the heat of the sun
Trying to...

What I get from this song is the spiral of losing yourself completely because you want so badly to be what he wants. Knowing it’s an illusion, the hope is still there that it can somehow work. This is a bitter sweet tale of unrequited love, or rather obsession.

This is what I've picked up from the song.
"You be the artist and make me out of clay." That makes me think of her wanting to be built to his expectations, so she would change the way she dresses and looks just so he would think that she was attractive.
"You be the writer and decide the words I say." That could mean that she always wants to say the write thing to him. Which implies that she would happily change her attitude for him.
"Only it's too hard to ask, won't you try to help me?" I'm not so keen on this one, but I suppose it's her saying that she wants to ask him if he would help her to be everything he wants. That's why she asks him for help.
I bet most of that was incorrect, but I like someone right now although he left me and now he is with another girl and we're still "friends" It's a long story. So I know what it's like to want to be everything a certain someone wants in a girl.
Thank you Ellie for making this song <3 It really means a lot to me :') -
I think it means that she wants to be exactly what the guy she likes wants and she realizes that it isnt worth being someone who youre not. she wants to make the relationship last by being everything he wants but she cant

“'The Writer' is the most personal and emotional song I've written yet. It cops to me being paralyzed with obsession over a lover. It's about how you'd do anything and change absolutely everything about yourself if necessary, just to be noticed by this one person. I’ve gotten so many messages from girls who can relate to it. I think anyone can get to that point when they love someone so much that they just start doing ridiculous things. I know I’ve done it.”

I think this song is about having difficulty undersatnding the one you love and changing yourself just to be noticed. A beautiful song with such a deep meaning :)

I think it's about two people in love who are having a difficult time understanding one another and still fight to be together! I believe Ellie is singing strongly about how deep her love is for another and wants to be with that human body, body, and soul... but can't seem to understand they're differences in love, and how to love! <3 GREAT SONG!! :) I really enjoy her voice and lyrics, but most of all her uniqueness. :)

This is quoted from Ellie Goulding, the singer/songwriter of this song -
I'm not sure but with the video set in a lighthouse and the song called the writer it sounds like Virginia Woolfs : To The Lighthouse, a semi-auto biography set in the Scottish Islands. Maybe she had been inspired by the novel....
