Evanescence: Haunted Meaning
Haunted Lyrics
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow inside
I know you're still there
Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I won't let you...
-
The band Evanesence said this song is about being trapped in a haunted house, possesed by their own fears. The inspiration for this song, according to the band themselves was the two movies: Night Of The Demons and The Rain, both are movies about demonic posession.

Fallenbat is right, I read that years ago when Fallen first came out. Its not about God or the Devil. I guess the others are right in saying that its about a girl who is constantly 'abused' by a man, and she wants to kill him but he's the only thing she's ever loved so she finds it impossible.
-
who am i to know, but i believe or would like to believe the song is about a mentally abusive relationship that the person can not get out of because the abuser has the victim so brainwashed that they need each other to survive and there so in love. you love them because you fear them, and raping is taking about the mind and how the abuser is brainwashing to the point of no return, i will not let you pull me down, waiting so bad to get away but you can't and don't know how cause of fear! that is my outlook on the song but like i said who am i to know

Frankly...this song could very literally be interpreted as from the perspective of a rape victim....Probably raped by someone close to her.Long lost words whisper slowly to me...I love you from your fathers mouth....still can't find what keeps me here...Why do I stay? When all this time I've been so hollow...used and there's nothing left....Watching me, wanting me....His eyes always follow her...Fearing you, loving you....It's her father that does this...She's loves him, but hates him for this pain....Even years after, she can still hear him, feel him there...Sorry....also an intense song for me...

I think this is about a girl living with a man who abuses her. She is scared of him but she can't leave because she loves him.

For those who are saying things about the raping line. rape is not always sexual. rape means that something is being forced apon you and you are unwilling. don't some of you think she could be talking about the devil? I mean if rape is just an unwilling force? I don't know if I'm right about the whole song. but think about this. She says "I know you're still there". maybe because she has been saved and believes in God but is saying that she knows that the devil is still there trying to tempt her away from God?
"wathing me, wanting me, I can feel you pull me down."
she knows that satan is there watching her every move and wanting her for himself and not for God. She knows that he is trying to pull her back down into the bad.
maybe? -
I believe haunted is written to express feelings from a relationship. The person in haunted(Lee-Moody) is with someone that love and hate much at the same time. You could say that despite the hate and the harm she gets from the person that is haunting her, for some reason she needs her/him.The confused feelings are obvious in refrain: "saving me, raping me, watching me" If she could she'd loved to leave this person: I won't let you pull me down. Cause when they are together she makes her discust, she is losing herself and wonders why she still stays

I think this song is about an old co-worker Amy once used to work with, until he started making sexual advances towards her, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I think this is about a girl who is being lusted over by a man she thought she knew. He makes many sexual advances towards her and the man's constant watch over the girl begins to depress and worry her. She feels constantly harassed by the man (I think the line "raping me" isn't literal), The girl doesn't know why she is staying so close to somebody who is bringing her down as a person. In the end she decides to let him no longer be a burden on her and she turns the man away. Never to see him again. "I won't let you hold me down" -
Well, I geuss your right, but I always thought it was about an abusive man who once worked with Amy. He often got drunk and made inappropriate advances towards her.

I think in this song, someone has died and their stuck in limbo, like a ghost would.
She is talking to the dark, or death which is like the dark because it is unknown. She longs for it, yet doesn't want it. The irony in the song is that the ghost is being haunted by the darkness, or death that she is not allowed.
