Evanescence: Hello Meaning
Hello Lyrics
Rain clouds come to play, again
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello, I am your mind giving you someone to talk to... Hello
If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this...
-
I know it is about the sister's death but before I found about it, I thought it was about someone rejected by the whole school with no one who cares and no friends:
"playground school bell rings again, rainclouds come to play again"
this is like how when she comes to school "rainclouds come to play", in that she is crying inside but can't let it out.
"has no one told you she's not breathing?"
has no one told the people ignoring her that it affects her so much and she feels like she's dead inside
"hello, I'm your mind, giving you someone to talk to...hello"
because she has no one to talk to but herself
"if I smile and don't believe, soon I know I'll wake from this dream"
she tries to ignore the problem and not let herself feel that it's real becaus it's too sad and hard to handle
"don't try to fix me, I'm not broken...hello, I'm the lie living for you so you can hide...don't cry"
because she feels like there's nothing wrong with HER, it's the ones telling her she should be different, but deep down she doesn't feel like it's true and she feels like there is something wrong with her.
"suddenly I know I'm not sleeping,"
even tho she tries to pretend it's not real she knows it is
"hello, I'm still here...all that's left of yesterday..."
each day takes a piece out of her and wears her away but she is still enduring it and still there.
I know it's really about her sis, but this way is how I can relate to the song sometimes. It's whati thought it meant before I learned. -
Hello is about Amy Lee's sister...Bonnie Lee died at the age of three...Amy Lee was SIX and in school...hence the line "Playground school bell rings
Again,
Rainclouds come to play,
Again" it's basically how she felt that day and the way she coped. -
I was just reading all these interpretations and the song came on. I have like 1200 in my playlist. I freaked out! Lol!
We all know it's about her sister. I don't know how many people need to say the same thing over and over again.
Besides music can be interpreted however you want it. Amy wrote it about her sister, but someone could see it fit into a different situation that they're going through. That's the great thing about music. There's not one rule to follow.
But in all honesty I just read 2 pages of the same thing. People trying to outdo each other by writing the same thing but with fancier words. Come on people! -
The songs about her sister dying when she was young and her not really understanding it, and learning as she grew older in life. Not about a little girl in a coma, or a blind girl.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Bonnie died from an unidentifiable illness.
The song "Like You" from The Open Door with the lyrics, "I long to be like you, sis, Lie cold in the ground like you did," also hinting at the death of her sister and her grief for it.
I hope this helps <3 -
amy losing her sister at a young age sounds like a good interprentation of this song. at least, that is what I have read from the other comments. but, the truth is, I have absolutely no clue if this is the truth or not. you see, I do not know anything about amy lee besides I can sometimes sound like her when I sing (choir class, but I want to learn more about her (but not in the freakishly psychotic way of some of her other fans!) I do like the question asked by evanescencefreak... How did bonnie die? I do not want any guesses or rumors to answer this. If one does not know the TRUE answer, one should not say anything at all...it is not one's place to speak! if one was wrong, how would amy feel if she read a number of incorrect aswers?--betrayed?
-
Well I know this about her sister and all that stuff..
But this is why I love it so much;
It reminds me of my childhood and being seperated from my bestfriend/cousin. We we're so close, but now we're not. It's like dead, but we're not. "Has no one told you she's not breathing?" makes me think it's a metaphor for Did you know you can't go back to the past?"
"If I smile and don't believe, soon I know I'll wake from this dream." is [though my eyes] saying 'my smiles are empty without you but I'll wake up soon, but I really won't'
"Suddenly I know I'm not Sleeping, Hello I'm still here, all that's left of yesterday.." is like saying 'This isn't a dream, I'm really awake, and it seems like yesterday we were together." -

When I first heard this song I didn't know anything about Amy's past, and the first thing I thought about was a child dying, or a childhood friend's death.
-
Like some people said before: the song Hello is about coping with the loss of her little sister Bonnie that died in 1987. Amy was 6 and Bonnie was 3. She has never performed this song live. Only a home video (that can be found on youtube) is the only time you can see her play or sing it besides the studio version recording.
-
I personally think it's just about loneliness. About a girl who has no friends, and the girl's so alone, she's having a conversation with herself. I cried the first time I heard it.
She did write it because of her sister though, but that was what I got out of it. It's no wonder they haven't performed it live, but they should.... on their next live CD. -
It's about Amy Lee's sister dying when she was young and how Amy coped.
