Evanescence: Your Star Meaning
Your Star Lyrics
I can't see your star.
Though I patiently waited, bedside, for the death of today.
I can't see your star.
The mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away.
And I'm alone now,
Me and all I stood for.
We're...

#1 top rated interpretation:I can see what you guys mean by the song being about Terry in the hospital.
I can't see your star
I can't see your star
though I patiently waited, bedside, for the death of today
I can't see your star
the mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away
[[SIGNIFIES HE MAY HAVE HAD THE STROKE IN LISBON. ALSO THAT AMY WAITED FOR THE NIGHT TIME..FOR ANOTHER DAY TO BEGIN]]
and I'm alone now
me and all I stood for
we're wandering now
all in parts in pieces, swim lonely
find your own way out
[[THE CHORUS: AMY'S ALONE WITHOUT TERRY. THEY'RE BEST BUD'S Y'KNOW? THE KEY TERM 'WE'RE' SHOWS ABOUT THE BAND IS IN PIECES WITHOUT HIM. THE BIT ABOUT HIM FINDING HIS OWN WAY OUT I SUPPOSE ABOUT HIM BEING IN A COMA.. THEY CAN'T WAKE HIM, HE HAS TO WAKE ON HIS OWN.]]
I can't see your star
I can't see your star
how can the darkness feel so wrong?
[[THE DARKNESS BIT..THE FACT THAT HE'S IN A COMA WHICH IS LIKE A SLEEP, HE MAY NOT WAKE ALIVE]]
and I'm alone now
me and all I stood for
we're wandering now
all in parts in pieces, swim lonely
find your own way out
[[^^CHORUS AGAIN^^]]
So far away
its growing colder without your love
why can't you feel me calling your name?
can't break the silence
its breaking me
[[COMA TERM AGAIN, HE'S IN SUCH A DEEP 'SLEEP' THAT THEY CAN FEEL HIM SLIPPING AWAY. AMY APPARENTLY TRIES TO CALL FOR HIM AND HIS SILENCE IS TEARING HER APART.]]
all my fears turn to rage
[[SHE WAS SCARED AT FIRST BUT NOW SHE'S ANGRY THAT DEATH MAY TAKE HER FRIEND AWAY]]
and I'm alone now me
and all I stood for
we're wandering now
all in parts and pieces, swim lonely
find your own way out
[[CHORUS BIT AGAIN]] -
My mom always told me as a child that if she were to ever pass away that she would be the brightest star in the sky and that's her looking down on me and if I ever needed to speak to her to talk to that star.
I later learned of this song and it has forever been the anthem for the time if I lose my mom.
So to me, it signifies the loneliness and grief I will experience upon my mothers departure.
"I can't see your star" isn't literal to me. It's more, "you're gone and the pain is high".
The majority of the lyrics to me are me trying to navigate the impending grief I will have to face and my sorrow she's no longer here anymore and maybe even upset that all I have now is a star in the sky to represent her.
Trying to find my way outside the grief and depression I will ultimately feel.
By no means is this how I imagine Amy imagined these lyrics to mean, but it's how it rings to me and it's so strong.
My mom came with me to my first concert ever which was Evanescence and Your Star played.
She already knew how I felt about the song and I told her, "they're playing it!" lol I'm weird.
But it's kinda comforting to know that I have a grief song to commemorate my feelings when the time does come.

I can't see your star
I can't see your star
Though I patiently waited bedside for the death of today
I can't see your star
And the mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away.
i think the star means the light in the dead persons eyes, and now they are dead in the hospital, so she can't see it anymore.
And I'm alone now
Me and all I stood for
We're wandering now
All in parts, and pieces swim lonely
Find your own way out
now she is alone, and greivung over the loss.
'find your own way out.'
that means that loss comes with anger, so she is angry.
I can't see your star
I can't see your star
How can the darkness feel so wrong?
that means she knows death is supposed to be peacefull, but it dosen't feel right.
So far away(meaning they are far away)
It's growing colder without your love(meaning the dead person is growing cold)
Why can't you feel me calling your name?(she is questioning the death)
Can't break the silence
It's breaking me(she realsies what is happening)
All my fears turn to rage( then comes the anger)
Nothing worth fighting for(she fough for the person, but know she can't.)
We're wandering now(through emotions)
All in parts and pieces swim lonely
Find your own way out

I think Amy Lee was singing about how her heartbreak after a breakup made her angry in 'Your Star'. She hated her ex afterwards, and decided to let him fend for himself. She wanted nothing to do with him anymore, and she didn't care if he got hurt after he broke up with her for no reason at all. This was MY interpretation, but if you disagree, let me know!

To me, this song kind of tells the story of someone who is completely alone and how they eventually come to accept it.
"I.can't see your star" - the person can't sense the presence of anyone else (or a specific person)
"Though I patiently waited bedside for the death of today" hints.at depression, as they just want the day to be over
"The mechanical lights of Lisbon," I think, refers to society, and even more so, those who inhabit it, and how they "frightened them away."
"And I'm alone now. Me and all I stood for, we're wandering now." - they're now on their own and are finally beginning to acknowledge this.
"All in parts and pieces, swim lonely, find your own way out." - By this point they are far too broken to care about anyone else's problems.
"So far away. It's growing colder without your love." - With no one by their side, loneliness and depression begin to set in.
"Why can't you feel me calling your name? Can't break the silence , it's breaking me." - They desperately want someone to notice and help them, but can't bring themselves to say anything.
"All my fears turn to rage" - they become angry at all of this
"And I'm alone now" - The chorus repeats as they have now given in to their descent into darkness and accept it with open arms, adding that there's "nothing worth fighting for."
At least that's my interpretation of it. -
To me this song is about someone who has just lost a friend, a love, and now they are trying to come to terms with it… "I can't see your star", and "How can the darkness feel so wrong?" could mean that their life just doesn't feel right without that other person. "Why can't you hear me calling your name?" is that cry we hear so often in songs about loss- "Why you? Why are you gone?" "Me and all I stood for, we're wandering now", might mean that the person they lost might have been someone whom they had plans for, the person they wanted to share their life with. Just my thought.
-
I think this song is about someone who has lost their ability to be nice, and amy says she can't see their star, basically their old self and she tries to say ho she feels about it.
-
I really don't understand the meaning of this I just know, that since that moment in Lisbon She never came back too Portugal again.....Amy next time choose a hotel in no lights near it :P
-
Cmon, here is this emotionally whacked girl, who cant keep a relationship, or a friend, or any relationship for that matter....Obviously lying in bed, no one to hold on to, she is all alone thinking 'Where did I go wrong??'
She might be in Lisbon, or thought of the time they had in Lisbon, anyway the guy or girl is pissed off and has moved on...Amy is now thinking where did I go wrong, it was great waking speaking to some one...That some one is not coming near you again, just like you do to every-one my girl....So you all alone now, and its another that has become just a Star.....and you know it....Where did you go wrong, best you ask the other umpteen people you have pushed away..Still you are a great artist, and your writing is good, but a team is a team...Im afraid your star is imploding!!!!! -
Whoever said it was about her sister, is wrong. the Hello of TOD is Like You....>.< Obviously someone didn't do their research properly. Like You and Hello are the only songs.
Anyways, about the song Your Star, I think its about missing your family or loved ones while far away...but it easily could be Terry's stroke or her feelings of someone else. Its flexible to me. -
If you hear closer.open your hears!"so far away it's growing colder without your love why can't you feel me calling your name? Can't break the silence.it's breaking me.the part where she says "can't break the silence". Between "can't and break, you can hear her calling someone's name.if you listen closely.you will hear her call the name three times. The name is"CRYSTAL"!THAT'S MY NAME!IN ORDER FOT YOU TO HEAR IT,YOU HAVE TO TURN THE SOUND LOW.SO TRY IT!THAT'S WHAT I HEAR!She's missing someone! She feels alone!that is why she is calling the name!My name is Crystal!
-
Doesn't anyone who calls themselves a fan ever bother to research the artists they love!!! On the Evanescence Reference on the EV Threads message board(on the official evanescence site) you have an answer. This is the Hello of TOD! Another song Amy wrote about her deceased sister!
-
"The Open Door" was Amy's only cd with mostly angry and blunt songs. Your star simply talks about the lack of light (worth/kindness/love/hope) she see's from a certain person. She is sayng she is far to broken and untrustful of herself to help someone again.usually the Chorus tells her feelings and the words inbetween are the story. She is sad in this song. She either lost someone or is about to lose someone. You only have to know how she feels to understand the song. A true artists...

Actually, I read what the meaning of this song was about. Amy said that she was on tour in Lisbon, and every night she would look at the stars. However, that night, she was in the city, and she couldn't see the stars, and she got really depressed.
Obviously, it's made to be more dramatic, but that's why it was written. -
Well that would explain the thing about mechanical lights-all the hospital equipment
-
Yea. The explanation for Your Star is that she wrote it at Terry's side while he was in the hospital. I do believe I read that somewhere (Other than here and that was a reasonable site).
