Florence + the Machine: Drumming Song Meaning
Song Released: 2009
Drumming Song Lyrics
That starts when you're around
I swear that you could hear it
It makes such an all mighty sound
There's a drumming noise inside my head
That throws me to the ground
I swear that...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think it's about.... FREAKING DOCTOR WHO! I mean come on people, listen to the lyrics! to me it sounds like a song about the Master. I have even had other people listen to the and they say the same thing.
-
Personally I think the song is based on actual Sirens, like how Howl is based off Werewolves. I'm not saying its a song about sirens, that's not it, its based off of the feeling. Being helpless for someone, like a fisherman to the Siren Song. If you look at the lyrics you can see all the symbolism about drowning, and a song you physically cant resist.
-
It's actually about Michael Wittmann and the battle of Villers bocage.
The drumming is the sound that comes from the Tiger tanks Maybach motor.
The church bells are from the old gothic church stepple demolished during the bombing raids to drive the Germans out.
she doesn't want to admire Wittmann's efforts. ...but what he did on the 13 june 1944 continues to echo...and she remembers this as she approaches her own panzer the leopard 2. -
My interpretation of this song is that someone is madly in love with someone and can't stop the heartbeat no matter what the person tries not water nor bells.
-
I think it's about desire and temptation. That there is someone who brings out the bad girl in her and the 'drumming' is her want. She tries to get rid of her feelings but she can't help but want to be wild.
-
I think "Drumming Noise inside my head that starts when your around" means her heartbeat. It is saying that the love she has for this person has consumed her and the only noise she can hear when shes around them is her heart beating for them. Then "as the water fills my mouth it couldn't was the echoes out" means that no matter how much she tries to "drown" her feelings and forget them, she can't because their so strong and she is madly in love with the person and nothing she does can stop her from feeling that way.
-
The song is about her trying to deny her feelings for the one she loves.
-
I think the drumming sound in her head are feelings she has for someone that she can't deny. She tries to drown them out with other things but she can't.
-
Personally, i think its about her being abused by a boyfriend, guy, someone etc.
like when she sings in the beginning
'theres a drumming noise inside my head that starts when your around i swear that you could hear it it makes such an almighty sound' shes talking about her heart beating so fast in silence or not but it drowns out everything she's hearing and it starts when "youre" around because she's nervous which makes her heart pound and i swear you can hear it is because she thinks its so loud that you can hear it and she doesnt want to be seen this terrified in front of "him"
then "i ran to a tower where the church bells chimed i hoped that they would clear my mind they left a ringing in my ear but that drums still beating loud and clear" basically she "ran to a tower wear the church bells chimed" to pray to God or some idol for help but she left still remembering "him" abusing her
and THEN when she moves towards his body (getting nervous) that drums still beating loud and clear
and then when she sings "i ran to a river and dive straight in i pray that the water will drown out the din" shes not PHYSICALLY diving into the water (or she could be) but i think its a metaphor for water is pure and she tries to save herself in the water to make pure all the sins "he" has done to her and then "as the water fills my mouth it couldnt wash the echoes out etc." (that whole line) basically means he's holding her down and making her drown ,metaphorically, so now shes drowning in "herself"
i hope this helps you understand the song better
at least this is what i interpreted from the song
